#55 - The StoryGraph Explodes!

How a series of tweets at the beginning of last week led to wild user growth and how we're still playing catch-up! 😅

A tale of "viral" tweets

Remember last week's newsletter when we celebrated reaching 1000 users?!

The very next day, a short chain of tweets, kicked off by the lovely Emma Barnes, culminated in this tweet:

As you can see from the number of likes and retweets, we suddenly got A LOT of attention, with hundreds of users signing up by the minute.

The day after that, this tweet went out:

Yup, you got that right: someone loved their first experience of The StoryGraph so much that they made a 4-slide presentation for Twitter. 😩

That tweet added even more fuel to the fire and well...The StoryGraph exploded! 💥

Over those few days we were to see our user base grow by 1750% and right now we're a few hundred users away from 20,000! 🤯

Remember what this graph looked like last week? 😅

The number of newsletter subscribers increased by 300% too!

Welcome to all the new readers — I hope you enjoy following along with this journey. 😊

Last week

So...you might have guessed: while exciting and validating, last week was rather overwhelming.

The main source of that stress: having over 5000 Goodreads imports to process when the most your infrastructure ever had to deal with at any one time was 8! 😰

Before everything exploded, we didn't have time to realise that the email that said "your import is underway! It will be done soon" was now a complete lie — but of course it was too late: 5000 people were out there thinking that their import had begun even though they were most likely sitting in a queue behind thousands of other users.

On top of that, our systems that processed our personalised "Ordered for you" sorting feature couldn't handle the 8000 new survey responses.

The emails and tweets started rolling in: What's going on? Why haven't I heard anything yet? Is it broken?

So the week was spent with myself and Rob furiously trying to catch up and respond to every message we received.

We've made good progress, including rearchitecting how the imports work, but we haven't quite crossed the finish line just yet.

Had to add that last line. It's been more than a few days for many people at this point. 😬

This week

Come next week, I'd love to be able to say to you all:
  • We've caught up with the Goodreads imports and they are running along smoothly as more users sign up

  • Everyone who has filled out an "Ordered for you" survey now has that feature available to them for use and as users sign up they're not waiting a long time to try it out

  • The site continues to run fast while all of this going on.
Wish us luck. 🤞🏾
