#172 - Morning Walk Thoughts

On a new addition to my morning routine, lil' improvements to readalongs, upcoming performance work, and a tight reading schedule! 😅

Morning Walk Thoughts

Earlier this year, I started going on a walk every morning. They've lasted anything from two (yes, my morning meeting crept up on me!) to twenty minutes.

For my first walk, I decided not to listen to music or anything from my ever-growing podcast backlog. Let me just listen to nature for once, I said! 😆

During that walk, it hit me that I'd been neglecting good ol' pure thinking time! I wasn't stressed or burnt out, but I was always "go go go", jumping into my usual morning activities, looking at the todo list, planning out my day, trying to get as much done as possible, and I never really took a step back to assess if I was happy with how I was spending my time, both on a high level and down to the day-to-day, hour-by-hour level.

I found myself reassessing my systems and my goals, and also coming up with new fun structures to my days. I've enjoyed experimenting since!

Now I do put on a podcast more often than not, but I always want to make time for a "no-audio" walk.

I'd recommend a morning walk to anyone! It comes with mobility and sleep benefits too and the fresh air is invigorating, setting you up for a productive day! ✨

Do you go for a morning walk or have any other habits that give you peaceful thinking time?

Since last time...

I opened up RailsConf and it was a lot of fun! The vibe in the room was brilliant. It was awesome to share StoryGraph's story!
Image, diagonally-focused, of me behind a podium mid-speech. I'm wearing a white jumper and light brown trousers. The front of the podium has a poster with the words "RailsConf Detroit" on it.

As is always the case, I didn't do as much work as I planned to while travelling. I'd hoped to make substantial progress with the Librarian tooling I've been working on, but it turned out to be a lot more complex than I thought.

Readalongs got a little upgrade though! Now users can see if there are any live ones happening from a book's page, and on the public page all of the filters are now functional. 🤩

Screenshot of the War and Peace book page on StoryGraph. The three-dot menu is expanded to show a link reading "View 3 live readalongs..."
The result of clicking on the link in the prior screenshot. Now we see the public readalongs page filtered down to show the active "War and Peace" readalongs. There are three, two visible, and they are sorted by "Participants: High to Low". The two editions shown are different and the top readalong has 63 participants, and the bottom one 45.
Bottom of the public readalongs filter menu. There are five checkboxes with the heading "Only show me...". The headings are "books on my To-Read Pile", "standalone books", "books I've read", "books I own", and "readalongs with friends". The top two and "books I own" are checked.
Screenshot showing the "readalongs with friends" checkbox checked on StoryGraph's public readalongs filter menu. There is a sort menu underneath toggled to "Activity: High to Low" and then it says "24 readalongs" before one readalong pane is shown at the bottom of the image.

I also spent several hours attempting to tackle a login issue we've been having since the beginning of this year.

Screenshot of a @the.storygraph Instagram story. The text reads: "For anyone who is being repeatedly signed out of the app, please try this and keep me posted over the coming days!" Then there's an embed of a Threads post from @the.storygraph with the text: Hello! Can you please try signing out of the app, force quitting, and signing in again? I've just deployed some changes and I want to see if it solves the issue. Thank you!"
So far, so good...but I still think it's too early to tell. 🤞🏾

Next two weeks

My number one development focus is performance stuff! By the next issue I want to have clear improvements to report!

This kind of work really needs dedicated focus time so I'm hoping to carve out multi-hour blocks this week to dive in!

What I'm reading

Today I'll be finishing off Doppelganger by Naomi Klein and then starting How To Say Babylon by Safiya Sinclair.

Last week I calculated that I needed to finish a book every three days in order to finish both the Nonfiction and Fiction Women's Prize shortlists in time for the winner announcements and well...now, I'm two days behind...but I'll catch up... 😅 (Abbie's keeping tabs on me! 👀)

Have a great week,

Nadia
