The StoryGraph Redefinition

When buddy reads were launched in December 2021, we had to explain what they were, especially for those outside of online book communities who may have never heard the term before.

Now, on the cusp of the launch of readalongs, we're getting a lot of people asking: "What's the difference between a buddy read and a readalong?"

And it's only as I go to answer that question that I realise the product has almost redefined what those two things are.

Screenshot of part of the original in-app notification that was sent out when buddy reads went live: Buddy reads are now live! 🥳 What’s a buddy read? It’s like a one-off mini book club, where you read a book alongside a small group of people, discussing it as you go along. Did the end of the chapter five leave your jaw on the floor? Add live reactions to specific parts of the book without fear of spoilers. You can rest easy knowing that comments are locked for other participants until they reach that far in their reading. 😎 Don’t have anybody to read with? We can help! We’ve got machine learning-powered suggestions for great reading buddies and we also show you a sample of...
Part of the in-app notification for when buddy reads launched

I'll say: "Well, with a buddy read, it's a free-flowing discussion with a small group of people, where you can leave comments for any point in a book, whereas with a readalong, it's typically a much larger group and the discussion is more structured, with forums you can access when you reach certain checkpoints in the book..."

And well, I'm saying that because that's how the features on StoryGraph work. 😅

Before our buddy read feature launched, people ran buddy reads more closely to how our readalongs will operate: namely, pre-set weekly check-ins, where you've all read up to a certain amount and then have a burst of activity discussing it, before cracking on with next week's reading. There didn't exist any software to enable you to do it any other way.

I just love that our product — especially once readalongs and book clubs are live — has unlocked new ways to read with others and will give hosts the flexibility to craft perfect reading experiences for their communities. 🥰

Since last time...

Readalongs are soooo very close...

There have just been a lot of side quests I've had to dedicate time to on this journey. But all of these diversions will not only enhance the user experience with readalongs, they'll (eventually) improve the experience of other existing features. Here's a little sampling:

First up, pagination, where you can click through pages and jump to whichever page you want to:

The bottom of a readalong forum page. There's a disabled "Previous" button. Then text which reads "page 1 of 7", where the '1' is actually a form input field. Then there's an enabled "Next" button.

Highlighted search results:

Screenshot of a readalong forum page. The user has typed 'nadia' into the search bar and three results are shown. The text 'nadia', whether as part of the comment body or the comment author's username is highlighted in a very light cyan (and the text is in dark cyan). Then by each comment is a link to the right to "Go to comment".

Emoji reactions:

Coming to buddy reads first!

And finally, improving how spoilers work (they currently don't work properly on lists) and look:
Screenshot of how spoilers will look in the app with the new updates. The image shows a review of "Fake Book by Nadia Odunayo" and the text reads: This is why the death of Jenny was the worst thing ever" and then a bullet point list: "It's sad; She's the best character; Really, George?". The list and "death of Jenny" are white text upon a black background. The final line of the review is just a black line, implying a further hidden spoiler.
I'm currently making a button on the text editor so that you can highlight text and click to wrap it in spoiler tags!

I've also sketched out how the secure file upload for giveaway hosts will work such that digital and audio prizes can be delivered immediately to winners in-app! 😍

Next two weeks

My goal is to finish all of the readalong side quests along with the main one, of course. Then I gotta get started on book clubs straight away! 😅

What I'm reading

Started This Place: 150 Years Retold last night, a beautiful graphic short story anthology exploring the history of the Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Book pane for "This Place: 150 Years Retold". On the left is the colour book cover, showing half of an Indigenous person's face, staring straight on. In the middle is the list of all of the authors and the book's tags: fiction, graphic novel, historical, short stories, young adult, emotional, informative, reflective, fast-paced, and a custom tag from me: nov-tbr. To the right is a progress bar, 9% filled. The book is marked as 'currently reading' and 'owned'.

Have a great week,

Nadia
