Bug Day

Back in Issue #117, I wrote about the struggle of balancing work on new, shiny features with "boring" behind-the-scenes work that slowly improves the stability, UX, and performance of the app.

Especially when only one or two people have experienced an issue, it can be easy to say: "this is not a priority at the moment, I'll get to it later...".

Screenshot of the top of an error page in my bug tracking software. The sub-heading bar reads: "Events (1) Users (1)".
A one-time thing that affected one user

But I've decided that in our quest towards excellence, it's high time that I started working on these things a little bit each week.

So now when I plan my week every Sunday, I declare one day "Bug Day" and the aim is to fix and improve as many product flaws as possible. 🤓

And in this journey I've realised that some of the feedback I enjoy the most is when someone spots a tiny quality of life improvement that I didn't announce anywhere and they DM me saying: "this is so small, but it's made a big difference to me." 🥰

Since last time...

Things did not  "[go] really well" last week and so I did not launch the Plus Custom Time Period stats feature, but I did make decent progress!

Screenshot from my test site of the top of the stats page. There's a label reading "Viewing stats for" and then three dropdowns. The first has "Read Books" selected, the second has "Custom" selected and the third has "2023-07-15 to 2023-07-31" selected. The third dropdown is in focus and there's a calendar popup which shows 15th July - 31st July highlighted. Underneath, the page shows 1 book has been identified with the top of the mood pie chart visible, showing up as one pink ("lighthearted") circle.
Seeing how the last half of July went on my test site!

I also managed to improve the functionality and safeguards around some librarian tooling, which kinda ties into the slow and steady "invisible" work I mentioned earlier.

Next two weeks

A new set of giveaways launches in five days and I've told hosts that I hope to have a few new features ready for the next round, including new stats for their dashboard and better exports of winner data, so...I better get a move on...! 😅

What I'm reading

I've wanted to read Anything You Want for a while now and I had the pleasure of recently meeting Derek at a conference! I could also do with a "read in one sitting" kinda book since I'm three books behind on my reading goal. 😩
Book pane for Derek Sivers's Anything You Want. The book cover is to the left and features the title and author name written in big, bold, colourful (orange and blue) letters. In the middle is the book info: title, author, 64 pages, first pub 2011, tagged nonfiction, business, self help, informative, fast-paced and a custom tag of 'july-tbr'. To the right is a progress bar filled up with green 11% of the way. It says "Started Aug 13, 2023" underneath."

Have a great week,

Nadia
