Community Roadmap

After going through Twitter, Instagram, emails, my project tracker, the roadmap, liaising with the team, and stirring in some of my gut and intuition, I've put together the Community-focused roadmap that'll be a focus for the rest of this year.

We're all so excited about it — especially our volunteer Librarians who had a little teaser on our catch-up call the other week 😁 — and I thought I'd share a few highlights with y'all...

Screenshot of the current StoryGraph Community page, which features a two column layout. The first column features a search bar ("Search by username or email...") and then three news feed updates and a button to "See more". The second column features an "All update" button, a pane for "Friends & Following", and pane for "Similar Users" and a link reading "Buddy reads".
We've always known that this page needs a complete overhaul. A lot of people don't know that there's a dedicated Buddy Reads section, or a Similar Users one for that matter!

What else is coming?
  • Book clubs, including tools to select books and schedule meetings, and of course we're going to get Rob's machine learning magic in there
  • A new readalong feature that'll support large groups of people reading a book together
  • A way to curate a list with a custom order and then share that to your profile
  • The ability to post an "open" buddy read on StoryGraph and have interested users click to join
  • A way to send in-app recommendations to friends
And so much more!

We'll also be working on a few new privacy features, including the ability to block users and mark books as "private".

And, as always, people who love StoryGraph because it's not "just another social media app" need not worry at all. 😇

Since last time...

I did manage to finally finish the most-requested reading challenge feature in the history of the product! 🎉

Screenshot of a prompt page on StoryGraph. There's a search bar in the middle of the page with the title "Add books to prompt". Inside the search bar, input reads "Salt sl" and there's an expanded dropdown. The first item shown is a greyed-out pane of Julia Armfield's book 'Salt Slow' and the second item is a fully opaque pane of Smallwood's 'Saltwater Slavery'.
Now users can add any book to a reading challenge from the prompt pages themselves!

Next two weeks

I'm yet to do my planning for August so things may change, but I suspect I will get around to giving Plus users the ability to view their stats for any custom time period. If things are going really well, perhaps the Compare Stats feature will be fully upgraded too, with all of the new view options. 🤞🏾

What I'm reading

Getting back into R.F. Kuang's Poppy War series earlier than I would have if not for a buddy read with a friend!
Book pane for R.F. Kuang's The Dragon Republic. The cover is to the left, featuring a white background, with a black/grey dragon-like creature and blue and black text with the title. In the middle of the book pane is all of the book information, including the following: 659 pages, first published 2019, and the tags: fiction, fantasy, historical, adventurous, dark, tense, medium-paced, july-tbr, soraia-buddy-read. To the right is a progress bar that is 9% filled. And text that reads: "Started July 30,2023".

Have a great week,

Nadia
