4 Million People!

On Friday, I gave a talk at a conference called Brighton Ruby, run by my very good friend, Andy Croll.

The talk had nothing to do with StoryGraph...

Screenshot of my title slide for my talk. It features white text on a dark blue background and the text reads: The Case of the Vanished Variable: A Ruby Mystery Story.
Ruby is the language StoryGraph is built in!

...but you could describe my talk as an Augmented Reality one because, before I introduce my Ruby Private Investigating alter ego (🕵🏾‍♀️), I start by introducing myself and my company.

I feature some stats about the product that I reckon y'all would be interested to know, so here goes:
Slide from my talk featuring dark green text on a white background reading: 4 million unique visitors per month
During this year, we've had an average of 4 million unique visitors each month.

Slide from my talk featuring dark green text on a white background reading: 45 million pageviews per month
45 million pages are viewed across the app and website each month.
Slide from my talk featuring dark green text on a white background reading: 150 million requests per month
And we serve just over 150 million web requests during that time!

When I have a moment of doubt about the product, or a tough time fixing something, or I feel like I'm having a lull in momentum, it's great to remind myself of these numbers. We're drawing in millions of people around the world so we're definitely doing something right! 🤩

Since last time...

The talk that I gave last week features screenshots from The StoryGraph's landing page and so I finally took the time to update the screenshots to feature the new design. I updated the font too!

Before

After

And I got through all of those upgrades I've been struggling with for weeks! We're on the latest versions of Ruby and Rails, and my local environment is back in tip top shape. 👌🏾

Time to return to delivering new and improved features! 💪🏾

Next two weeks

At the moment, everyone who hasn't been successful in winning a prize from a giveaway they've entered, receives this notification:

Screenshot from a StoryGraph notifications page. The text reads: "Unfortunately, the prize draw for nadia's giveaway of Miss Treadway and the Field of Stars has come to an end and you haven't been selected as a winner this time around. Please still check out the book and best of luck in future giveaways!"

We're going to be adding a feature to Premium giveaways where the host can customise the message that goes out to all non-winning entrants. The next beta round starts in a couple weeks and I want this feature to be ready for then!

Now we're in July, we've officially entered the second half of this year. The part of the year where we focus on Community.

So, despite not having reached my H1 goals for the product — 😅  — I will be looking to finalise our 2023 Community roadmap based on all of our customer research and surveys, including all of your wonderful responses from a few issues ago! 😁

What I'm reading

The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron is right up my alley! I watched the documentary years ago, but don't remember any details.
Book pane for The Smartest Guys in the Room. The cover is to the left, and features red text on a white and black background, the white an image of shredded paper. The middle features the book information: authors (Bethany McLean, Peter Elkind), page numbers (480 pages), pub year (first pub 2003), and genre and mood tags: nonfiction, business, true crime, informative, medium-paced. To the right is my reading information: there's a progress bar 14% filled in, start date (June 23 2023), "currently reading" label, and an "owned" label.
What are other great books in this genre/style?

Have a great week,

Nadia
