Your Community Features Wishlist

If all goes to plan — so far I'm personally behind schedule, hey ho 😅 — the second half of this year will be focused on taking StoryGraph's Community features to the next level.

So, to kick off my customer research/roadmap building on this, I have a small request/challenge for y'all...

Screenshot of StoryGraph's Community News Feed. There are three panes, lined up vertically, one on top of the other, detailing random users' reading updates. Above the updates is a toggle labelled "only show users similar to you". Top right is a button labelled "People You Follow".

Hit "Reply" and let me know three things:
  • One new community/social feature you'd love to see this year
  • One current community/social feature you'd love to see improved this year
  • A community/social product development that you'd hate to see on StoryGraph
You can respond to 1-3 of the prompts above — ideally in a super succinct bullet point list — but no more than 3 things or I will discount your response. 😌

There's a lot of you and only one of me so I gotta be harsh! 😆

Since last time...

The other night I gave a TEDx talk at the University of California San Diego!

It was a different setup to my usual conference talks and I enjoyed the challenge!
Photo of me on stage in a brown dress. My slides are behind me against the whole backdrop and to the left of the photo, on stage are letters spelling TEDxUCSD.

My talk was about content warnings so I reckon some of you might be interested in it once the video goes live in a couple months!

Product-wise, I took the next step in improving the onboarding process. Now users are asked to set up their Community preferences from the get-go:

Screenshot of the StoryGraph's Preferences page. There are three dropdowns under a section titled "Community" The first dropdown is labelled "Following" with the subtitle "Who can follow you and see your reading updates in their news feed?". "Anybody" is selected. The second dropdown is labelled "Friends" with the subtitle "Who can send you a friend request?". "People I follow" is selected. The last dropdown is titled "Buddy reads" with the subtitle "Who can invite you to take part in a buddy read?". In the dropdown, "Anybody" is selected.

And thank you soo much for all of the lovely responses to my last issue. It was such a highlight of my week. 🥰

Next two weeks

I'm excited to collaborate with Rob soon on upcoming changes to recommendations. We've got improvements coming to the behind-the-scenes machine learning aspect and the user-facing side, all leading to a higher quality experience! 😎

What I'm reading

I'm still in California — hence the "late" time of this issue going out — and I'm enjoying doing an in-person buddy read with a friend on Tom Hanks's new release. The concept intrigued me so I hope it lives up to my expectations!
Book pane on StoryGraph for Tom Hanks's The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece. The cover is to the left, showing a man walking off into the distance with a briefcase into a blue sky. In middle of the pane is the book info and tags: fiction, historical, literary, adventurous, emotional, funny, medium-paced. To the right is a progress bar at 3%, and text that reads "Started May 21, 2023".

Have a great week,

Nadia
