Hit "Reply"

I was talking to a friend the other day who'd just started a newsletter.

He was surprised when I told him that I'd really enjoyed the first issue. He'd heard not a peep from any other person and he's someone who's relatively well-known online in the software industry.

It made me think of my experience running this newsletter and I told him that it wasn't a reflection of what people actually thought.

Sometimes I'll get an email from a stranger that starts with something like "I've been reading your newsletter for years and I love it...", or  "I'm not sure if I'm meant to reply this way or if anybody actually reads this...", or "I probably won't get a reply but..."

A lot of people just quietly enjoy their newsletter subscriptions, don't necessarily have anything to say in response, or do, but assume the author might be too busy or inundated with other emails to reply to them.

This is all to say: thank you for reading, especially those of you that have been around for years, and don't be shy to hit "Reply", whether I explicitly ask a question or not.

It's always a pleasure to hear from you and I will write back. 😊

Since last time...

We've started to launch new stats options for Plus users! Now they can view their stats filtered down by mood and fiction or nonfiction:

Screenshot showing the top of a StoryGraph stats page. There's an expanded dropdown with two sections. The top section is labelled "Standard" and has the options Read Books, To-Read Pile, DNF Books, and Owned Books. The second section is labelled "Plus" and has the options Moods and Fiction/Nonfiction. "Moods" is selected.

And I finally started working on our new onboarding process, picking up a small behind-the-scenes change that'll subtly improve the experience for all new signups — automatically setting your time zone upon account creation!
Screenshot of the top of StoryGraph's Preferences page. There are three dropdowns, labelled "Time zone", "Theme", and "Languages". In the top dropdown, "GMT London" is selected.
Users can set it themselves on the Preferences page, but a lot of them don't know this page exists! 😅

Next two weeks

There's still so much more to do with user onboarding and Plus stats, so that's where my focus will be, with some time made for smaller bugs.

I'll be travelling to California to speak at a TEDx conference too, so in between StoryGraph work I'll be finding any opportunity to rehearse my talk! 😄

What I'm reading

I've picked up Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang so that I can make some more progress on the Short Story reading challenge I'm doing this year!
Book pane for Stories of Your Life and Others. The book cover is to the left, featuring yellow text on a black background. In the middle is all of the book info including the tags: science fiction, short stories, adventurous, challenging, slow-paced. I've also added a custom 'april-tbr' tag. To the right is a progress bar at 60%.
Screenshot of my progress pane for the "23 Short Story Collections in 2023" reading challenge. The bar is filled up 17% with the the text "17% (4 prompts completed out of 23)" written underneath.

Have a great week,

Nadia
