An Excellent Onboarding

Something we've been talking about doing for several months now is improving our onboarding process.

We've finally designed one that we reckon is more effective and engaging and we're excited to get it out there.
Screenshot of the Community section of The StoryGraph's Preferences page. There are three dropdowns. The first is titled “Following” and “Anybody” is selected, the second “Friends” and “People I follow” is selected, and the final one “Buddy reads” and “Anybody” is selected.
A lot of users aren't aware they can tweak Community settings! We want to change that!
By the end of the new flow, users will have their timezone, community, and audiobook preferences set up correctly and will have more awareness about what's on offer in the app.

What's the best app or website onboarding experience you've ever had? Hit "Reply" to let me know!

I hope that in a couple months there's a lot more people who would answer "StoryGraph" to this question! 🤞🏾

Since last time...

Visiting the London Book Fair took up a lot of time! I thought I'd have more opportunities for app development before and after each day, but alas, it wasn't to be!
Photo from an upper floor of the London Book Fair 2023. There's a large convention hall packed with stands and booths.

It was great to meet so many people in the industry and tell them all about our Giveaways platform. We had a promotion going for a free Premium credit and I'm looking forward to when those listings go live next month.

Even more great was how many people had already heard of us! 😍

When we launched the redesign earlier this year, user-added tags were placed alongside the mood, pace, and genre ones. The only difference among the StoryGraph-generated and user-generated tags was font colour and we received feedback from a couple of users that such a design choice was not accessible.

So I made a couple small tweaks to help the user-added tags — which are also clickable — stand out some more:

Next two weeks

Apart from working on onboarding, there's a lot of stats work to crack on with! 📊

Last time I mentioned that the next step was adding new options to the Plus Compare Stats feature.

Instead, I think it's better to work on the new Plus stats segments — think pages per mood, pace, genre, rating, and more – and then upgrade the Compare Stats feature in one go. 👀

What I'm reading

I'm really enjoying listening to Debra Lee's memoir, narrated by the woman herself!

Have a great week,

Nadia
