What's Right vs. What's Liked

I've long struggled with what to do about our mood pie charts!

They were our first ever chart and have always been very popular on the whole!

Multicoloured pie chart, with eleven segments, showing moods of books I've read so far in 2023.
The mood pie chart of the books I've read so far this year.

However, we've had a few complaints over the years, especially with respect to general readability and the colours — that's everything from people with colour blindness struggling to distinguish between the segments, to people who just don't like the colour scheme.

Coming up with an aesthetically-pleasing, accessible colour scheme for a pie chart which could have up to 14 segments, all appearing in a variety of orders, was always going to be tricky. Especially because it shouldn't really have to be done. Pie charts are only meant for data sets with up to seven categories. 👀 😅

But, can we just change the pie charts, to say a bar chart, or some other format, without making a bunch of people sad? Or maybe everyone will just not care that much and, in fact, prefer it?

I think it's one for a community vote! Let me know if you have any thoughts!

Since last time...

In time for the seventh set of beta giveaways, which went live on the 19th, users now have a dashboard to keep track of all of their entries, see the status of the prize draws, contact the hosts, and more! 🏆

Screenshot of the new "Entered Giveaways" user dashboard. Two panes, with grey borders, are shown, one on top of the other. Each pane features a book cover to the left and the giveaway and entry details to the right. The information to the right features: book title, host name, dates of giveaway, prize draw status, format of prize, delivery mechanism of the prize, and eligible countries for the entrants. The top pane's prize draw status reads "Winner" and the second pane's prize draw status reads "Didn't win". Top right is a grey button with the label "Browse giveaways".

Next two weeks

I really want to spend more time working on stats! Not only do we want to allow easy access to your TBR, DNF, and Owned stats from the main stats page, we've got a bunch of new charts we want to release for Plus users.

We also want to improve our onboarding process — especially getting people to set up their community preferences from day one and removing the need for them to fill out a free-text box in order to get high-quality recommendations — and plan to start working on that!

What I'm reading

I've been hooked on Bill Browder's Red Notice!  It's been on my radar for a while and it's been exceeding my expectations!
Screenshot of the book pane for Bill Browder's Red Notice. On the left-hand side is the book cover, which is white, with a red star and black text above. In the middle column is the book title and information, including its tags — nonfiction, history, politics, dark, informative, tense, medium-paced — and on the right-hand side is my reading information: a progress bar filled up 64% of the way through, start date (March 10, 2023), a 'currently reading' label, and a 'mark as finished' button.

Have a great week,

Nadia
