A new community for book lovers...

If you're a Twitter user, you may have heard of Mastodon? It's the currently fast-growing, self-hosted main alternative.

When it came to setting up a presence there, we decided to host our own server and create a new space for book lovers around the world to gather! 🙌🏾

Screenshot of the landing page of StoryGraph's new Mastodon server, bookstodon.thestorygraph.com. It features information about the server on the left-hand-side. Some recent posts in the middle, and links to sign in or create an account on the right.

You don't need to be a StoryGraph member to join! We just wanted to be a part of facilitating great bookish conversations and community.

Come check it out at bookstodon.thestorygraph.com and tell your friends! 😁

If you'd like to follow The StoryGraph, Rob, or myself there, you can do so at the following links:

Since last time...

The last two weeks have seen the launch of lots of new stats! 🎉

First we've got DNF (Did Not Finish) stats, including two new, unique data points:

Screenshot of the top of a Abbie's DNF Stats page. There are 5 boxes/panes displayed. The first features the title of the page: “abbie_’s DNF Stats". The second features the number of books and the proportion of pages read compared to the total number of pages. Then there are two further boxes side-by-side which detail two stats: "Average progress through a book before DNFing" — 25% — an "Average time with a book before DNFing" — 13 days. Finally in the last box, we only see the top of a Moods pie chart.
Everybody is having a lot of fun sharing and discussing their 'average progress through' and 'average time with' a book before DNFing it. We've seen so much variety!

And we've also got new charts detailing which of your custom tags show up on the books read or featured in a given time period:

A horizontal bar chart showing my tag stats. There are 12 rows, with the tag listed on the vertical axis, and the no. of books on the horizontal one. The bars are in green. The top two span out to 22 books. The next three stop at 4 books, and then the number of books decreases until the last handful of tags feature 1 book only.
I love how people are already using these charts to do things like incentivise themselves to borrow more from the library or figure out which recommendation sources aren't working for them.

In other news, our official 2023 reading challenges are ready to go and we'll be launching them on the 21st! 🥳

Next two weeks

Although there's still a lot of stats work we want to get done, there are three other things we need to focus on for the final two weeks of the year:
  • The redesign
  • The 2022 Reading Wrap-Up (launching Jan 1st 2023!)
  • January Pages 2023
Wish us luck and please send all of your best productivity vibes! 🍀

What I'm reading

I will hopefully squeeze in one more Toni Morrison with Song of Solomon as part of the (super slow) chronological read that I'm doing!
Book pane for Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon on StoryGraph. The cover is to the left, with a deep green background featuring the outline of wings. To the right is the book pane featuring the book information. It is tagged with: 'fiction, literary, magical realism, challenging, emotional, reflective, and slow-paced". It has 448 pages and was first published in 1977. There's a progress bar 23% filled, and it's marked as "owned" and "currently reading".

Have a fantastic rest of the year,

Nadia
