Five Stars in the App Stores

Sometimes it takes having your own app in the App Store and Play Store to get why so many apps out there have some form of "If you enjoy using this app, please leave us a five-star review..." messaging somewhere.

Often the people who are happily using the app with zero issues don't remember or think to do so. It's not a natural part of their workflow.

Whereas, for those that have some issues, however small, or harsh...

Screenshot of a 3-star review from the App Store of the StoryGraph app. The review is titled: "Requires login to use" and the body of the review reads: "You cannot use this app without logging in; it does not integrate with your Apple ID, you have to login separately."

...a natural outlet for the complaint is an app review.

We often get reviews that should have been support tickets instead:

Screenshot of a 2-star review for the StoryGraph Android app in the Play Store. The review starts with "the app is great" and then goes on to explain a recent glitch that has cropped up. It ends with: "it's very frustrating as I really enjoy this service and prefer it over goodreads.." Underneath is a reply from The StoryGraph asking the person to email in to support so that we can look into their problem for them.
We'll fix the problem, though the review often doesn't get updated. 🥲

Based on some of the reviews, we reckon that a bunch of people think that if they email us we won't respond, as that's what they're used to from other companies, and so a low star review will surely get our attention! 😩

Last week, it got to the point where I decided it was time StoryGraph had its own similar messaging, and so I posted a video of myself on our Instagram stories!

Screengrab of an Instagram story of me talking to camera. In the screenshot you can see captions that read: "Just popping on to say that if you love the StoryGraph app..."

It worked well and led to a bunch of new, glowing appraisals in the app stores. 🤩

Eventually we'll have this messaging built into the app, but in the meantime, I'll be sure to remind people periodically on our social media channels.

So, if you love using the iOS or Android app, please consider leaving us a five-star review to let others know. It's really helpful! Thank you! 🙏🏾

Since last time...

You can now flag content types and specify topics, themes, and tropes you don’t like to read about in your reading preferences survey!
Screenshot of a new “beta” section when viewing your StoryGraph reading preferences survey. Two sections a highlighted by a golden yellow box labelled “Beta”. The two sections have green headings: “Types of content you never want to read about” and “Topics, themes, and tropes you don’t like.”
We then use this information to improve your recommendations and show a handy warning icon around the app if a book you’re looking at likely features any of your flagged content types!

You can read more about the update on our roadmap.

I've also had five usability interviews so far and the proposed redesign is being received very well on the whole!

Next two weeks

I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the planned stats updates and performing some software upgrades in advance of any redesign work starting in earnest!

What I'm reading

I'm making solid progress with my two chunky reads! Should be done with both before my next issue. 🤞🏾
Screenshot of part of my currently reading page on StoryGraph. It shows two books lined up vertically. The top one is The Winners by Fredrik Backman. I am 73% through. The second is The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I am 61% through.

Have a great week,

Nadia
