Improving Our Look and Feel

We'd love to handle most of our common user interface and experience pain points before the year is up. 👀

When I started to think about how we'd go about resolving them, I realised I was fighting the current design and that perhaps it was time to rethink how everything was laid out.

Screenshot of the StoryGraph mobile book list view. The top book pane is of "Punch Me Up to the Gods" by Brian Broome. At the top of the pane, above the title, there's a 4.25 number alongside a gold star icon and a link to "see review". Underneath the title, the data is as follows: author, genres, moods, duration of audiobook, publication year, links to mark the book as owned, buy the book, or browse editions, the custom tags section, and the dropdown to indicate the book's read status.
There's a lot people want to be able to do from the book pane, but not much space!

The worst would be to do a lil' redesign and:

a) The people who are currently happily using the app now start struggling, and/or...

b) The people who are currently struggling/don't enjoy using the app are in the same, or even worse(!), position!

Enter: Usability Testing!

Green text on a white background. The text reads: Love the app or struggled and stopped using it completely? We need your help!

This past week we've been gathering interview candidates and we've already got almost 500 people signed up!

I've never done this type of user interview before but I'm excited to learn how and get started! 😁

Since last time...

Rob and I have sketched out what's going to be included in the next iteration of our stats section, including the features necessary to transition our Plus plan to be an Advanced Stats package.

Screenshot of a genres chart from StoryGraph. It's a horizontal bar chart with 6 bars. The x-axis is "No. of books" and the y-axis is the genre. The top bar (Memoir) is 3 books. The second bar (History) is 2 books. And the final four (Thriller, Science, Psychology, and Biography) are 1-book long. Every bar is a different colour.
How would you feel if I told you that we were delivering on the fact that several people want to see the equivalent of this chart, but for their custom tags?

The first round of our giveaways came to an end and the prize draw ran smoothly. It was so awesome to see how excited the winners were!

Screenshot of an Instagram story from user @my_book_hoard. Superimposed on the StoryGraph giveaway page showing they have successfully claimed their prize is the following text, in caps: "Ahh this is so exciting. I won a StoryGraph giveaway. This book sounds so good. This seriously made my day. 😍"

The second set of listings is now live!

Screenshot of the mobile view of Featured Giveaways on the homepage. There are three book covers side by side, horizontally, with the third cut off about halfway. There's a green button top right above the covers labelled "Browse".

Next two weeks

Hopefully I'm in the midst of my usability interviews! I'm very curious to see whether the proposed redesigns are easy to use or not.

We'll also be filling up spots for the third round of our Beta Giveaways Programme. Based on our customer feedback, we've decided to reinstate our initial 50% discount while we work on implementing the features that'll bring the platform closer to its official launch!

What I'm reading

Reading a couple of big ones right now so might be a little while before I finish a book. Then again, I do have some long train journeys coming up. 😌
Screenshot of my "currently reading" page showing that I'm currently reading The Winners by Fredrick Backman (688 pages, 24% through) and The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett (1088 pages, 16% through)

Have a great week,

Nadia

P.S. Know somebody who's an avid reader or would enjoy following along with this journey? Please do forward this email to them! Thank you. :-)
