Repositioning Plus

When we first launched the pre-order page for Plus back in October 2020, we proposed a wide variety of extra features. We weren't sure what we should include and how people would respond.

Almost a year and a half on since the plan's launch, the feature variety has only increased...
Screenshot of the top of a tag stats page in StoryGraph. The title reads: "Tag stats: libro-alc". Underneath is a yellow "Plus" label. Then there's a grey button reading "Compare tag stats". Underneath is a second white page, feature two pie charts. The top one is labelled "Moods" and the second one "Pace".
A lot of Plus users don't know that they can get stats for their tags!

However, our customer research has shown that the extra features offered are not the number one reason people subscribe.

They mainly do so in order to support this tiny, independent, non-Amazon alternative to Goodreads. Along the way, they may fall in love with a Plus feature or two, but the features are, on the whole, nice-to-haves.

So, as part of taking our business and product to the next level, we started to think: is there a way to reposition and tweak Plus such that in addition to subscribers knowing that they're supporting a small, bootstrapped company, they also regard the entire feature set as compelling and valuable?

We think there is indeed a way and we're excited to explore it with current (and future!) Plus users. 😁

Since last time...

We've updated the way sorting by title works. Now we ignore starting articles such as "A", "An", and "The", making the app a much more helpful bookstore and library companion! 🙌🏾

Screenshot of a list on StoryGraph sorted by "Title: A-Z". The top three titles are "The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle", "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism", and "Agent Sonya".
We'll be adding in provisions for symbols and a few other languages soon.

A blind user emailed us reporting that they were having issues navigating the footer menu bar on mobile. Through fixing that, I learnt even more about app accessibility, improved a couple of other areas, and took away some actions to tend to in the coming weeks.

Screenshot of the bottom of the StoryGraph homepage in the mobile app. The footer menu bar is visible, showing four icons laid out horizontally. The left-most home icon is highlighted in green, while the remaining three (a pie chart [stats], a group of people [community], and an avatar [profile]) only feature a black outline.
If you're using iOS VoiceOver or a screen reader on mobile, you can now slide your finger along the bottom menu bar and the icon options will be read out in order with no interference from background content!

Next two weeks

Product-wise, we'll be continuing with the work that I mentioned in the last newsletter as well as addressing some performance and maintenance tasks.

Business-wise, we'll be ruminating on the topic I opened with!

What I'm reading

I'm reading my first ever book by V.E. Schwab and I'm enjoying it!
Screenshot of the StoryGraph book pane for 'The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue' by V.E. Schwab. The book cover is to the left. It's dark blue with light blue flowers and orange vines along it. To the right is the book information in a white pane. It is tagged with: fiction, fantasy, historical, lgbtqia+, adventurous, emotional, mysterious, medium-paced. It has 545 pages and was first published in 2020. There's a link to "View buddy read" and underneath that a progress bar that is 81% filled out. It has been marked as 'owned' and 'currently reading', and there's a custom tag at the bottom reading 'july-tbr'.

Have a great week,

Nadia
