#12 - Money, Money, Money...

In which I reflect on what I should do about The StoryGraph's funds as we approach the end of the year.

So you have another job, right?

At the beginning of this year, I had no idea what 2019 would hold.

I had been on the verge of moving to California to develop a product with a friend, but that fell apart last minute.

Given I had a decent amount of runway from the business I was running before that, I decided to keep easily accessible only enough money for a year to work on my own projects.

Fast forward to today, and starting by tinkering on my 'readlists' side project has turned into what The StoryGraph is now.

We're coming to the end of the year, and I'm starting to ask myself serious questions about...
Money!

Should I keep funding myself because I can?

Should I prioritise trusting the process I'm following and answering more questions (e.g. what is the business model?), or should I be more concerned about the pace I'm moving at?

It's always been a dream to build a profitable business that didn't need outside investment to get off the ground, but maybe The StoryGraph isn't that kind of business... 🤔

Last week

Thinking over everything, the fact that I currently have complete control is incredibly valuable. I should hold onto that for as long as is possible, while maintaining an open eye and an open mind.

In the meantime, I need to reach product/market fit and clarify the business model.

However, it won't hurt for me to put in an application or two to some of the startup programmes out there.

This week

Other tasks from last week included delivering features based on the feedback from Round 1 of the Beta, and starting to onboard Round 2 testers.

Below is the new and improved filter menu. Non-beta people — spot the difference?

This week will be more of the same!
What I'm reading right now

Very on theme:

There's a fair amount of funding horror stories out there. Have you, or anyone you know, had a positive experience with investors?

And I'm re-reading this in anticipation of next month's release of the sequel:

Have a great week,

Nadia
