#118 — Online Events and Giveaways

A fun online event we ran on Twitter the other day, some small product updates, and a trip to meet a friend and colleague... 👀

Online Events and Giveaways

We did something fun on Twitter the other day!
Screenshot from a tweet from The StoryGraph account on April 23rd. The tweet reads: Let’s help you choose your next book! 📚 Tell us your favourite genres, what you’re in the mood for, and any specific topics, themes, or tropes you like, and we’ll suggest a book using our recommendation engine. One lucky person will receive their recommendation in the mail! 🥳".

For 30 minutes, Rob and I used people's responses as inputs to our recommendation algorithm and tweeted back suggestions:

Screenshot of two responses to the aforementioned tweeet. The first user, Paprika, asks for "Standalone sci-fi or high fantasy with a very strong world building, adventurous, dark, and medium-fast paced". We reply with a link to "To Enter the Path" by Stephanie Flores and Paprika replies with "Added! Thank you". The second use, Amanda BW, says: "Looking for a contemporary romance. Love Olivia Dade, Jen DeLuca, Talia Hibbert, and Jasmine Guillory. Love for it to have a bit of angst and discussion of mental health stuff". We reply with a link to "Wait for It" by Jenn McKinlay and Amanda replies with: "I love it! Immediately adding it to my list! Thank you!".

It went really well and the winner of the draw was delighted too, especially as she loved the sound of the book we ended up suggesting!

Not too long ago we ran a Plus giveaway on Instagram, thanks to a donation from one of our Early Bird customers, and that was a big hit.

We want to do more things like this across Twitter, Instagram, and eventually in-app too!

Got any ideas for the kind of things you'd like to see? 🤔

Since last time...

You can now view edition information directly on a book’s page! 🙌🏾
Screenshot of the book page for Ali Smith's "Companion Piece" on The StoryGraph. Underneath the book information pane, is a section labeled "Edition information" and the ISBN, Format, Language, Publisher, and Publication date is listed.
It's collapsed by default!

And there are more options when you're filtering your lists via your tags:

Screenshot of a section of the filter menu on the To-Read Pile page. The heading reads "Tags" and there are two radio buttons above a select field: "Include any..." and "Include all...". Underneath that is another select field and the label reads "Exclude..."
Spot the new "Include all" and "Exclude" options?
😁

Outside of the app, we're now set up as affiliates with Libro.fm and Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus, the latter especially great for our German and other European users. Look out for new "Buy" links on the book pages soon!

If you live in the US or Canada, you can use code STORYGRAPH when signing up for a new Libro.fm membership to get a free audiobook for your first month. 🙌🏾

Next two weeks

I'll have met Abbie in person for the first time ever since she started working with me in September 2019! After I've sent this email, I'll be off to get a train to the north of England! 🥳

We're also working on something that we hope will help significantly improve the user experience around missing book data — stay tuned! 👀

What I'm reading

I'm loving Ship of Magic so much! Can't believe I left it so long before diving back into Hobb's universe!
Book pane for Robin Hobb's Ship of Magic. The brown cover is to the left and the right is a white book pane featuring the book information. It is tagged as: fiction, fantasy, adventurous, emotional, mysterious, slow-paced. It has 880 pages and was first published in 1998. A progress bar shows that I'm 71% of the way through. It has a custom tag at the bottom labelled "march-tbr".

Have a great week,

Nadia
