"Invisible" Work

A lot of the work that we've been doing lately isn't super exciting or immediately obvious to our users.

They're things that we've been meaning to do for a long time. Things that improve the performance of the app. Ensures it stays stable and fast as more and more people use it. Tidies up our book data behind the scenes as users add them to our system. Handles certain errors a lot more gracefully...

Screenshot of the Plus redemption page on StoryGraph. The page is split into two halves vertically. On the right is a cover image collage and to the left is an input field with a placeholder reading "Enter code...". Above the input field is a title reading "Redeem your Plus Gift Subscription". There's a white button underneath labeled "Redeem".
We've resolved a case where inputting a Plus discount promotion code on this page, instead of a gift code, caused the page to crash instead of showing a helpful message.

I go back and forth on what the product strategy should be.

Should we always have some more forward-facing features on the go, or just focus on this type of work to smooth out the user experience and common pain points, and trust our users will see great progress as the little improvements compound...? 🤔

Since last time...

We passed 900k signups! Fewer than 100k to go until we can say one million people have signed up to The StoryGraph! 🤯

Screenshot of a StoryGraph dashboard pane. The text on the pane reads "Number of Users: 909,837."
Where the number stood this morning!

Any ideas on what we should do to celebrate that milestone when it arrives? 😁

We've also fixed a bunch of cross-platform/browser issues with the display of flash notification messages, as well as improved the logging of book data edits, making it a lot easier for us to undo changes if anything goes wrong!

Next two weeks

Hopefully we'll have put the finishing touches on the work we're doing to improve the user experience around book editions.

We ran a couple of polls on Twitter and Instagram recently and the people have spoken:

Screenshot of a few tweets from The StoryGraph's Twitter feed. The top tweet reads "Right now, you can only see the edition information of a book on StoryGraph when you click on the "Editions" link on the book pane. (1/3)" The second tweet reads: "Do you want to see this information on the book page?" Underneath is a poll where 80.7% of 616 people have voted "Yes". The third tweet reads: "If this information is on the book page, do you want it expanded (as in the screenshot in the prior tweet) or collapsed (and you'd have to click a toggle to reveal it) by default? (3/3)". Underneath is a poll where 59.7% of 586 people have voted "Collapsed".
The results were incredibly similar on Instagram!

We also hope to improve what it looks like when you're browsing another user's profile pages. We know a lot of users want to see their rating of a book alongside that of the person whose profile they're viewing.

What do you think of this?
Mockup of a book pane on The StoryGraph mobile app. Above the title of the book, "Station Eleven" are two lines of text. The top line reads: "Your rating: 4⭐️ (See review)". The second line reads: "Their rating: 5⭐️ (See review)".
Cluttered or great? Any other ideas? 😁

What I'm reading

In order to get the most out of last week's EconTalk podcast episode, I'm reading Leo Tolstoy's Master and Man.
Book pane for Leo Tolstoy's Master and Man. To the left is the book cover, feature a man, looking down writing on a piece of paper. On the right is the book information. The book is tagged with: fiction, history, literary, challenging, dark, emotional, slow-paced. It has 75 pages and was first published in 1895. There is a green progress bar, filled up 77% of the way. The book is marked as 'currently reading'.

Have a great week,

Nadia
