37x Better

Yesterday, I started a book that talked about the power of daily marginal improvements.

Improving at something by just 1% every day might not seem like much, but when you take compounding into account...

The aggregation of marginal gains shows how small improvements and one percent gains compound. There is a chart with time going up to '1 year' on the x-axis and 'Improvement or Decline' showing on the y axis, starting at 0. There is a horizontal dotted line at 1 on the y-axis. There are two lines coming out from this point. One shoots upwards up to the 1 year mark and the other tends downwards towards zero up until the 1 year mark. Text above the chart reads: "1% better every day 1.01 to the power of 365 = 37.78. 1% worse every day 0.99 to the power of 365 = 0.03."

...over the course of a year you end up thirty-seven times better than when you started. 💯

This really struck a chord with me because when I'm having a slow or frustrating day working on the product, I always tell myself: "Just end the day with StoryGraph being a little bit better than it was before and you're on the right track!".

Looks like I am indeed on the right track! Look out for the app being at least thirty-seven times better than it is now by the time 2023 hits. 😆

Since last time...

Speaking of marginal improvements, the last couple of weeks featured a whole range of seemingly small updates that have had a big impact on different segments of users.

For a start, author, series, and reading challenge prompt pages are now personalised to each user based on the editions they've interacted with:

Screenshot of the series page for Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels Quarter. The first two and a bit books are show, each marked as read, and each with my rating and link to my review at the top.

Users can now toggle the reading and page goal progress updates on and off whenever they like:

Screenshot of a user's 2022 page goal on StoryGraph. There is text reading "10000 pages" and then a progress bar that's 3% filled up with green. Underneath the progress bar is text which reads: "2076 more pages until you're caught up! You've got this!"
Screenshot of the edit page for that 2022 Pages Goal. There is a number field with 10000 filled in and underneath a recently unchecked checkbox with the label: Keep me updated on how far ahead or behind I am.
Perfect for those that found the constant reminder of how far behind they were stressful!

We also released the next version of our recommendations model, developed new tooling for our volunteer librarians, and worked on some cross-browser/platform compatibility issues!

Next two weeks

It's going to be a couple of weeks of general UX improvements and customer research synthesis! I still haven't analysed my findings from the interviews I did at the end of last year. 😅

What I'm reading

Maybe the opening segment of this newsletter was a clue for some of you that I'm reading Atomic Habits by James Clear.

Habits, routine, and discipline are all strong points for me but I'm hoping I might pick up a few gems that help take my practices to the next level!

StoryGraph book pane for Atomic Habits by James Clear. The cover is to the left and features a cream background with gold large text reading "Atomic Habits". On the right is the book information. It's tagged with 'nonfiction, psychology, self help, informative, slow-paced'. There is a progress bar filled up with green by 7% and the book is marked at 'currently reading'.

Have a great week,

Nadia
