Stats and Suggestions

One of the things I wanted to find out in my recent customer interviews with Early Bird Plus users was which of the paid features, if any, resonated with them the most.

Two took the lead: Compare Stats — where you can look at the stats from two different time periods side-by-side — and Up Next Suggestions — where we make recommendations for what you should read next from your To-Read Pile.

Screenshot of the top of my Compare Stats page. I'm comparing the years 2020 and 2021, which is evident from the dropdown in the top white pane. There are two other white panes. The second one, features two columns. The first column has text which reads: 2020, 67 books, 22,010 pages. The second column reads: 2021, 65 books, 20,345 pages. The third pane shows a line chart with two lines. One is a light blue line for 2020, the other black for 2021. The y-axis shows number of books and the x-axis shows Months from January to December. There is a yellow Plus badge underneath the chart.
My 2020 reading compared to 2021. First year in a while where I read fewer books than the year prior. All that StoryGraph work. 😌

Screenshot of two of my recent Up Next suggestions. There are two book covers on the left, which accompanying text for each on the right. The top suggestion's text reads "We've picked this one out just for you from your StoryGraph recommendations — enjoy!". Above is a yellow badge reading "Powered by machine learning". The second suggestion has the text "Here's a random pick!".
I already have five books in my Up Next queue, hence the clear buttons!

The latest research round made it clear that the current focus of adding polish to what we already have is the right one. We can't wait to take Compare Stats (and our stats offering in general) and Up Next Suggestions to the next level!

Ultimately though, our users' main reason for subscribing to Plus isn't because of any particular feature. It's because they want this independent, non-Amazon Goodreads alternative to survive and thrive! 💪🏾

Since last time...

I've been to the States and come back! It all happened so fast!

Still from a video. Rob and I grin into the camera, seated side-by-side.
A still from a video we recorded for Instagram whilst I was there.

I thought we'd get more done in the way of coding side-by-side, but instead we just had a bunch of product and strategy discussions. It was awesome! 🥰

Apart from that, we've been continuing the work on improving the user experience around browsing and adding different book editions and I worked on some behind-the-scenes tooling for our volunteer librarians.

Screenshot of a fake book ticket from my local testing environment. To the left of the white pane is a book cover. On the right is text which reads: "Ticket submitted by nadia 2 days ago. Just a fake ticket." Then there are two links. The first reads "Assign yourself to ticket" and the second reads "Assign to Admin".
There are some things our volunteer librarians don't have permission to do. Now, instead of everybody having to scroll past those items to find things to work on, they can assign tickets to a team member directly.

Next two weeks

The beginning of March is going to be very interesting. It's exactly a year since the Plus plan launched so it's time to see how many of the 1400 customers who pre-ordered renew! 👀

Today and tomorrow we'll be working on providing a way for our Early Birds to transition over to a proper subscription, if that's what they'd like to do! 🤞🏾

What I'm reading right now

For the next instalment of our Instagram Book Club, we'll be reading Maggie O'Farrell's I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death. The live show to discuss it is on March 27th at 12.30pm PT/3.30pm ET/8.30pm GMT, so I'll be starting this one real soon. Do consider joining in on the fun!
Book pane for Maggie O'Farrell's I Am, I Am, I am. The book is tagged with: nonfiction, autobiography, essays, memoir, emotional, reflective, slow-paced. It has 304 pages and was first published in 2017. I've selected 'to read' on the dropdown bottom right and I've also added the tag 'storygraph-book-club-march'.

Have a great week,

Nadia
