We made it!

Happy New Year, everyone! 🥳

It's been a wild couple of weeks at StoryGraph HQ, culminating in some of the highest traffic we've ever had in a single day.

Screenshot of app visitor stats. There's a line chart. Number of visitors is charted against time. The line starts moderately high, just above 15k, dips a little, and then rises up to about 18k. Above the chart are four stats: Unique visitors: 199k, Total pageviews: 3.6m, Bounce Rate 20%, Visit Duration: 6m.
Our visitor stats for January 2nd

Yesterday we had almost 200k unique visitors, spending an average of 6 minutes in the app and generating 3.6 million page views. 🤯

Often, with great scale comes great slowdowns (responsibility, too. :P), and Rob and I have been spending hours monitoring the product, upgrading servers, and adjusting our architecture, so that the larger number of concurrent users can enjoy a fast-loading app at all times.

We're super excited for what this year has in store. We've got big plans!

Thank you for following along with the journey this far. I hope you'll stick around for more! 😃

Since last time...

In my last newsletter, I said that these four things had to be done by next time:
  • Our 2022 reading challenges are live
  • Users are taking part in buddy reads in-app!
  • People are participating in our January Pages Challenge
  • Users can archive their reading challenges
Well, how did we we do?

1.  2022 reading challenges  ✅

These are all live! Thousands of people are already taking part.

We've got our Onboarding challenge, in order to help users new and old explore our features, and then there's our Genre and Read The World challenges for those looking to leave their comfort zone and broaden their horizons.
Screenshot of the Read the World Challenge page. There is a green title at the top that reads "The StoryGraph Reads the World 2022". Underneath is a subtitle reading 'Hosted by thestorygraph'. Underneath that reads: 3301 participants, 1023 books added. At the bottom of the screenshot are the first two prompts: Brazil (113 books added), and Haiti (65 books added).
As voted for by our Instagram community, our Read The World challenge replaces our usual Translation challenge.

2.  Buddy Reads  ✅

There are just under 400 buddy reads happening on The StoryGraph right now. 😍

Users can read a book alongside up to 4 friends, leaving reactions at specific parts.
Screenshot of part of StoryGraph's buddy read page. There are two sets of comments. The first set shows a comment and a reply with a progress bar on top. The second comment is hidden behind a black bar that has a label "Reveal comment". Then there's a third comment with a padlock icon and the accompanying text: "Comment locked until you reach 29% in the book". Underneath is a cyan button with the label "Add comment". Then there's a heading called "Ratings & Reviews" and a white pane underneath with a padlock icon and the text saying "Section locked until you mark the book as read".
Haven't reached that part of the book yet? The comments are locked to guard against spoilers.

Not everyone has reading buddies, and that's okay. We can help!

When people go to start a buddy read, they will see suggestions of who to invite, whether that be someone that our machine learning algorithm thinks would be a great fit or someone random in the community who wants to read the book soon.

For Plus users, tell us who you want to read with and we'll suggest which books y'all should pick up:

Screenshot of the Plus Buddy Read Book Suggestions page. The subheading reads "for you and ab_reads". There are two book covers shown, one on top of the other. To the right of each book cover is a label reading "Powered by machine learning". Then text explaining the book, e.g. "A fiction book (contemporary), that's emotional, hopeful, reflective, and medium-paced". Then there's a green button underneath with the label "Create buddy read".
A couple of suggestions if Abbie and I were to do a buddy read soon.

3.  January Pages Challenge  ✅

We launched it a week before the New Year and over 30 thousand people have signed up! 🙌🏾
Screenshot of the January Pages Challenge 2022 page. There is a title of the challenge in green at the top. Followed by black text which reads: "Hosted by thestorygraph. 30804 participants." There is a box showing the start and end date as the beginning and the end of January. There is a green label underneath the dates that reads "Joined". A pane underneath that is labelled "Your challenge progress." There is a green bar and the text under that reads: 100%. 2/2 days successfully tracked. Finally, there is a "Pages in January 2022" chart, showing that about 75 pages have been read on the first and second of January.
Aiming to read 75 pages a day this year.  So far, both days' reading has been completed minutes before midnight. 😅

4.  Archiving Reading Challenges  ✅

Got this one in at like 3am on January 1st. It was still December 31st where most of our customers are based. 😌 😆
Screenshot of a couple of reading challenge panes. In the bottom right is an archive icon.

So, yes, 4 out of 4!

I'm delighted. 😁

Next two weeks

The number one focus right now is ensuring the stability and performance with our increased load, but then we'll be shifting gears into polishing and enhancing the features we already have.

What I'm reading right now

I'll be starting Jonah Berger's Contagious: Why Things Catch On for a buddy read that I'm doing...
Screenshot of a StoryGraph buddy read pane. It's in two columns on a white background. In the left-hand side column is the book's cover. To the right is text that reads (across 3 lines): Contagious: Why Things Catch On; Reading with rob; Ends: Friday, 14 January 2022. Underneath those three lines is a green link labelled "View buddy read".

Have a great first week of the New Year,

Nadia
