Four weeks left...

...and lots we have to do in that time!

Even though we're not gearing up to launch like last year, the beginning of a new year is an important time for reading apps.

Readers are feeling inspired and excited, setting all of their reading goals and joining reading challenges. We want StoryGraph to be ready to support all aspects of that.

Screenshot of the top of my reading challenges dashboard page. There are three white panes. One at the top spanning the width of the screen, and two underneath, taking half of the screen each. Each pane features the name of a reading challenge and a progress bar. Two of the bars are 100% complete, one is 95% complete. On the top right are two buttons: "Browse" and "Archive".
For reading challenges that don't have an end date, we need to allow users to archive them whenever they want to. Some people's dashboards are getting rather busy!

Within the next four weeks we need to have buddy reads ready, set up our official 2022 reading challenges, allow users to archive old ones, make it possible to gift a Plus subscription (this ideally a week or two before Christmas), have our January Pages Challenge set up (more on this below), and start thinking about our end-of-year wrap-up feature...

We can do it all, right? 😅

Wish us luck because we're certainly gonna try! 😁

Since last time...

Work on buddy reads has started in earnest! 🙌🏾
Screenshot of the upcoming "Create new buddy read" page on StoryGraph. The top of the page has the title: New buddy read: Miss Treadway and the Field of Stars. Then there is a white pane featuring a form. The first field is titled "Description" with the subtext: Optional. Use this space to add any extra details about your buddy read, including start date, suggested checkpoints, links to additional resources, and any other logistics. Then there is a text editor, filled out with links to author notes, a proposed reading schedule, and a link to a Doodle poll for a potential Zoom call. Then a field "End date" with the subtext: Optional. Set an end date for when people will be prompted to leave their final thoughts on the book. It is still possible to view and add comments to a buddy read after the end date. If no end date is set, the buddy read will automatically end once the last participant has marked the book as 'read'. Finally, there is a dropdown to invite up to 4 participants.

Typically, a buddy read is where you read a book alongside 1 or 2 other people, and either discuss it as you go or at the end. Our offering will cater to both styles, allowing users to ignore comments that react to parts of the book they've not read yet.

I was hoping to be further along with this by now, but buddy reads is one of those features where lots of little extra considerations and edge cases crop up regularly!

Next two weeks

Apart from finishing buddy reads, we recently floated an idea for a "read a page a day in January" challenge for the chance to win some prizes and it went down really well with our community. We'll have to set that up soon to give everyone a chance to hear about it and get involved!

Screenshot of a StoryGraph Instagram post. It's of a cyan square with white text on top. The white text reads: "Read a page a day in January with The StoryGraph?".
Our Instagram followers seem to be really excited about this idea!

What I'm reading right now

I'm reading the final book in the Jacaranda challenge that I'm doing with Abbie! Yes, it's a big one, but it's an easy read, so hopefully I can fly through it this week!
Screenshot of the book pane of Harris Joshua's A Circle of Five. The cover is to the left, and is dark, featuring a group of Caribbean women sitting around a circular table. On the right is a white box featuring the book information: it has the tags nonfiction, biography, history, emotional, informative, reflective, and medium-paced. It has 671 pages, and was first published in 2020. The book has been marked by me as 'currently reading'.

Have a great week,

Nadia
