Quietly Social

We made the decision a while ago (#34, January 2020 to be exact) not to become "just another social site".

However, we're now at the point where one of the main things missing in the product is a way to interact with friends about what they're reading, something that booklovers are typically keen to do!

Screenshot of three updates from my StoryGraph Community Feed. There are three white rectangular sections. Each features a profile picture, a username, the action they took, and a book. The screenshot shows "whatsofieread" recently reviewed "Slouchign Towards Bethlehem" awarding it "5 stars" and assigning the tags "informative, reflective, and slow-paced". I have liked this update, as evidenced by the red heart at the bottom of the card. The two other updates show "thebookgeekboutique" has reviewed one book and then started reading another.

How do we cater to this need without sacrificing the quiet, safe online space that we've cultivated so far? 🤔

We think we've got a way: private, invite-only groups, without push notifications! 😁

Some of the concerns I had back in January of last year still stand: we don't want to end up building an app within an app, making the scope of the product way too large, confusing, and a nightmare to maintain.

We need to design a version of this functionality that's refined in scope, but still incredibly useful and worthwhile — hopefully our community can help us get there! 🤞🏾

Since last time...

We've finally started work on the next version of the stats dashboard! And the charts that we've released so far have been a hit! 🙌🏾

Pie chart showing format of books read. The data are as follows: digital - 9 books (75%, light pink), audio - 1 book (8%, purple), print - 2 books (17%, blue).
Now you can see the formats of books you've read!

Bar chart with 7 light blue bars showing most read authors. The data are as follows: Stephen King - 4 books, Taylor Jenkins Reid - 4 books, Fiona Staples - 2 books, Brian K. Vaughan - 2 books, Margaret Atwood - 2 books, Ann Patchett - 2 books, Edward St. Aubyn - 2 books.
You can also see the authors you've read the most in any given time period, as well as the authors that feature the most on your To-Read Pile!

The feedback on Up Next Suggestions has been amazing and we've had a little uptick in new Plus customers since its launch! 🎉

This text from early beta user Lauren got me emotional:
Screenshot of an iMessage, which reads: "This feature is magic, where has it been all my life!! Honestly the best thing I’ve ever seen, love the one that goes with a reading challenge prompt and that matches the reader profile!! Honestly this is sooo cool!!" I've added a heart reaction in response.
🥺🥺🥺

Next two weeks

By the next issue, the stats updates should be complete and we'll have a plan ready for groups. There are also some Android app updates that I need to work on — the share button will be coming soon... 😅

I'm preparing for my next series of customer interviews. Do you fit into any of the following categories?
  • Early Bird user
  • User who took out a free trial and decided not to purchase Plus when it lapsed
  • User who took out a free trial and eventually subscribed to Plus
If you do, and you'd be up for a 20-minute video call with me some time in the next month or so, hit "Reply" to let me know!

What I'm reading right now

I've picked up this 900+ page tome! I've heard wonderful things and hope that it becomes a favourite of mine!

Book pane for The Eighth Life (for Brilka) by Nino Haratischwili with Ruth Martin (Translator), Charlotte Collins (Translator). The book is tagged with: fiction, historical, emotional, reflective, sad, slow-paced. Pages listed are 944 pages and first published 2014.

Have a great week,

Nadia
