Now you see it...

...Now you don't

On the missing monolith.

Liberating arts

Last week, I mentioned that The Liberating Arts would soon be publishing a conversation I recorded with Lydia Dugdale and Todd Billings about why and how liberal arts education should teach us how to die and, in so doing, how to truly live. You can now listen to or watch that conversation here.

After you do, you'll no doubt want to pick up Lydia's book, The Lost Art of Dying: Reviving Forgotten Wisdom and Todd's The End of the Christian Life: How Embracing Our Mortality Frees Us to Truly Live.

Recommendations

Listen to this

Today is the first Sunday of Advent, and over the next few weeks, I'll recommend some Advent and Christmas music, starting with six versions of Greensleeves. Thirty minutes of Vince Guaraldi, John Coltrane, Joshua Bell and Chick Corea, Alison Krauss, Wynton Marsalis, and Jimmy Smith.

Well worth a deeper dive: The many Coltrane takes.

Didn't make the cut, but worth a listen: Oscar Peterson, Ellis Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, Coleman Hawkins, Mahalia Jackson, and Vanessa Williams.

Cook this

Turkey is usually the star of the show for a big Thanksgiving meal, but I may be in the small minority that thinks the vegetables (and cranberry sauce/relish) are the unsung heroes. This week, I tried out recipes for roasted carrots, creamed spinach, and blanched-then-sautéed green beans with shallots. The spinach and green beans were hits.
