Big Table #5 T H I N G S
Welcome to Big Table #5 -- T H I N G S
Since last issue, the Stuff issue, I'd like to think we've all grown as people. Fundamental particles have cohered into compounds, molecules, gone from mere atomic soup to higher-order structures, stuff has become... objects, ideas...[ movie trailer sound ] Things.
What things can you make other things out of?
If you need a waistcoat, get some Werther's Originals.
If you need a barn, get a downed Helicopter.
If you need a coffee table, get Caligula's boat's floor.
Hope this helps.
New Mind Things dropped

Words for things
And hark, I have added a new category of thing: words.
There are a lot of words out there that are pretty easy to find. So I've focused on harder to find words, ones that I or friends have discovered on our own. If you have discovered any words, please do submit them for inclusion.
Some words include:
What is this Thing called "pasta"
Look, there's a lot of pastas. I, for one, am very glad there's a newsletter to tell you what pasta shapes are what. For example, here is their verdict on scailateli:
Eating this pasta is like getting out a roll of tape thinking you have loads left when in fact you have reached the end. The inner cardboard ring was grossly deceptive; just like scialatelli is about how long it is. It is comically short; just so severally challenged in the old length department. It looks like tagliatelle that forgot to grow. This is silly nonsense pasta. It also kind of looks like a pile of stiff grated cheese. God, pick a lane scialatelli.
What do Things look like?
The Consumer Aesthetics Research Institute collects examples of hyper-specific popular or commercial aesthetic subgenres from recent history. Got any gadgets from the Frutiger Aero era in your closet? Do you pine for the calm certainty of Frasurbane? Maybe we're all headed for the inevitable future of Pomo Faux Ruins. (Many of you may know CARI already, but it is ever changing and deep, so it's always worth a revisit.)
Is color a Thing or Stuff?
Ok, I'll be honest -- I just forgot to put this in the last issue. And, since, stuff is fundamentally different than things I really must apologize. But, like cari.institute, the Colourlex reveals the deep structures of why things look the way they do, but at the level of pure pigment. I found it while doing research for a new painting that's based off an almost laughably famous painting. I thought, someone somewhere probably put this under a microscope, maybe I can find out what pigments are in it. I love that the answer was "yes, you can."
The Street Potato
Sometimes Things become Stuff.
The Street Potato, once a Thing, went on the journey to become Stuff.
Things To Do
This counts. "Things to do" is a well established phrase. No questions at this time.
See Martha's art
Martha's lovely show at Lowell is over, but she has a big, gorgeous show opening this weekend at Ditch Projects. It's not exactly in the neighborhood, being two hours south in Springfield, but if you fancy a road trip, it's going to be super good. It opens on March 16 and runs until April 7.

See my art
Grapefruits Art Space has returned, this time in the rare book room of Mother Foucault's. The first show is Rediscriptions , a collection of my drawings and smaller paintings. When it's over I'll post full documentation, but for now enjoy this walkthrough. If you're in Portland, you can see the show by appointment or chance during Mother Foucalt's open hours until March 25th.
If you want to stay informed about what's happening, subscribe to the grapefruits sometimes art newsletter.
See art at Secret Room's re-grand-opening
You'd already know about this if you subscribed to grapefruits sometimes art newsletter. And I quote:
secret room press are getting ready to open a new storefront space on division st! they are fresh off a super fun and sweet pop-up project in the lloyd center mall, and somehow found the energy to immediately set up shop in the former little otsu space, which kicks off on friday with a group risograph show. congratulations secret room!!
If you have opened this newsletter on the day that I have sent it, then know that this is happening tonight, March 15.
That's it. There are no more Things or Things to do.
