Yet Another Newsletter LOL Issue: Numero Uno
Welcome to the first issue of Yet Another Newsletter LOL!
As mentioned in my blog post about starting this newsletter, this newsletter will be mainly about web development, programming in general, and tech industry related news, but I may also throw in some fun random stuff occasionally.
Let's get to it.
Around the Web
- The Plan for React 18 - The React team have started work on a React 18 release, starting off with an alpha release. As well, they've create a React Working Group.
- Swyx's analysis of React 18 in the form of a Tweetstorm
- The React team hosted a Twitterspaces about React 18. Although not available yet, a recording and transcript should be available in the near future.
- Hello Astro: A New Kind of Static Site Builder
- My friend Todd Libby wrote a great piece on looking at WCAG 2.5.5 for better target sizes for CSS Tricks.
- jest-dom v5.14.0 introduces two new matchers: toHaveAccessibleName and toHaveAccessibleDescription to promote the use of more semantic and accessible markup.
- How to avoid Z-INDEX war
- NEXT.js Conf is happening on Tuesday, June 15th.
- What caused the internet outage that brought down Amazon, Reddit and Gov.uk?
- I've been enjoying Polywork. It's a great way to showcase all the work you've been doing. It's still invite only, but they're pretty liberal about giving out invite codes. They usually drop some invite codes on Sundays, so give them a follow on Twitter if you're interested.
A Whale of a Tail
Shoutout to my coworker Gracie for this one.
I’m a lobster diver who recently survived being inside of a whale. AMA!
Words of Wisdom for the Week
we think about debugging as a technical skill (and it absolutely is!!) but a huge amount of it is managing your feelings so you don't get discouraged and being self-aware so you can recognize your incorrect assumptions
Shameless Plugs
- This upcoming week on the Practical DEV Twitch stream, which I co-host, we have the awesome Cassidy Williams joining us at 5pm UTC (1pm Eastern) to talk about NEXT.js, mechanical keyboards, all the things! If you aren't already, give us a follow on Twitch!
- I normally stream learning Rust on Tuesdays, but I'm off this week for NEXT.js conf. In the meantime, you can checkout past streams about learning Rust
- Thursday I'll be streaming JavaScriptHours.com. I thought for this week, it'd be fun to implement some parts of the Jest testing framework from scratch. Who knows how far we'll get, lol.
- Here's my full streaming schedule
Until the next issue!
