Apple shipped a speech API that beats Whisper; Anthropic prices Claude in rupees

Next Tool — Issue: Tue Jul 14, 2026

Subject: Apple shipped a speech API that beats Whisper; Anthropic prices Claude in rupees A/B alt 1: PixVerse hits $2B, Anthropic goes local in India, and three other AI shifts A/B alt 2: 4 AI tools shipping now — one is already running on your Mac

TL;DR: Apple released a new on-device speech-to-text API that's measurably more accurate than Whisper. Anthropic localized Claude pricing for India — its #2 market — but skipped UPI. Singapore's PixVerse crossed a $2B valuation on the strength of 15M monthly video-gen users. And Waze now accepts natural-language route requests powered by Gemini.

1. Apple's SpeechAnalyzer beats Whisper — on-device, on Apple silicon

What it is: SpeechAnalyzer is Apple's new on-device speech-to-text API, available in iOS 26 and macOS 26, replacing the long-standing SFSpeechRecognizer.

Why it matters: A public benchmark by Inscribe (5,559 LibriSpeech utterances, M2 Pro, fully on-device) put SpeechAnalyzer at 2.12% WER on test-clean and 4.56% on test-other — beating Whisper Small (3.74% / 7.95%) by a comfortable margin and running roughly 3x faster. The legacy SFSpeechRecognizer it replaces came in last on clean speech (9.02%), worse than Whisper Tiny.

Honest take: If you're shipping on Apple silicon and still calling SFSpeechRecognizer for anything longer than a voice command, the migration is essentially free and gets you 3–4× fewer wrong words on the same audio. The trade-off is platform lock-in: this advantage only exists on Apple hardware.

2. Anthropic prices Claude in rupees — but still no UPI

What it is: Anthropic has started localizing Claude subscription pricing for India, its second-largest market by usage.

Why it matters: India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage per Anthropic's own Economic Index — behind only the US. New rupee-denominated tiers: Pro at ₹2,000/month (~$21) on annual billing, Max from ₹11,999/month (~$125), and Team from ₹2,399/seat/month (~$25), all inclusive of local taxes. OpenAI rolled out rupee pricing for ChatGPT with UPI support back in August; Anthropic has the numbers now, but UPI support is still missing — Indian users still pay via card or Apple/Google in-app billing.

Honest take: Big deal for Claude adoption in India — but it's a "kinda late" deal. OpenAI has had UPI for ten months. Anthropic shipped pricing parity without payments parity, which is the harder half.

3. PixVerse is now a $2B video-generation company

What it is: Singapore-based PixVerse closed its Series C extension at $439M total for the round, taking the company's valuation past $2 billion.

Why it matters: The startup reports 15M monthly active users and over 150M registered users, and its image-to-video API runs at $4.80 per minute of generation — competitive on the Artificial Analysis leaderboard. It ships V-Series (consumer/API), C-Series (pro film and commercial), and R-Series (world models for game development and world-building). Investors joining the extension include Alibaba, CDH Investments, Ivy Capital, Mirae Asset, and BlueFocus — with Alibaba also as a deployment partner.

Honest take: Video gen isn't going away even though Sora 2's shutdown rattled the category. PixVerse is the clearest proof that consumer video generation is a real, monetizable market — not a hype cycle. Skip if you're not building anything video; bookmark if you are.

4. Waze now takes natural-language requests — and adds an AI motorcycle mode

What it is: Waze rolled out Gemini-powered features: conversational destination search, personalized route suggestions, and a new Motorcycle mode.

Why it matters: Tap the search voice icon and ask things like "Find me a coffee shop that's open right now," "Find me parking close to Grand Mall," or "Find me a gas station nearby with the lowest prices." Personalized routes learn your preferences — if you favour highways over local streets, those surface first (turn-off is in settings). Motorcycle mode uses AI to account for two-wheeler-specific shortcuts, restrictions, and lane hazards like potholes, speed bumps, and narrow bridges. Personalized nav is rolling out globally on Android and iOS now; the voice search is in beta.

Honest take: The natural-language search is genuinely useful and a clear Waze-over-Apple-Maps moment for casual drivers. Motorcycle mode is a small thing done well if you ride, irrelevant otherwise.
