Two-Spirit and Queer Indigenous Pride Shines on Indigenous Peoples Day 2023

Welcome to a very special edition of News River!
As summer solstice arrives, the world navigates its rough currents of discord and division, we've never felt a stronger need to celebrate unity, acceptance, and the extraordinary strength in our shared diversity. In this edition, our focus shines brightly on Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ Indigenous people this summer solstice and Indigenous Peoples Day.
We are all working towards the power of love winning over hate. Here are a few organizations we love!
RISE Project
We can’t say enough good things about the RISE Project! Their Indigiqueering approaches to education places Indigenous knowledge and understandings of sexuality and gender at the forefront while operating in the context of relations to the traditions of Indigenous cultures, lands, spiritualities, communities and relationships, and the interconnectedness of them. Animikii was proud to build this site with RISE!
Two-Spirit Dry Lab
This collaboration of Indigenous and settler researchers is Turtle Island’s first research group focusing exclusively on Two-Spirit people, communities and experiences. It’s called a dry lab because they don’t use beakers, but instead involves applied data analysis.
The Phluid Project
Through completely gender-free fashion, The Phluid Project strives to break down societal barriers and promote self-expression without limitations. They partner with brands and designers who celebrate the non-binary. Catch Animikii’s CEO talking Diversity Equity Inclusion with the founder of The Phluid Project at Collision!
Celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day!
Today is Indigenous Peoples Day! Jenene Wooldridge, a Mi'kmaw author from PEI, captures the significance of this day to her and many Indigenous people across Canada.
“I believe Indigenous people have valuable lessons to share about survival in the face of great challenges.” — Jenene Wooldridge
Here's where some of our Thunderbirds will be celebrating with their communities:
- Vancouver Island events
- Toronto area events
- Edmonton area events
- Montreal area events
- Calgary area events
- Canada-wide event list
Today, we're shining our spotlight on these 2S and LGBTQIA+ stories!
We’re grateful to have our headquarters on traditional territory of the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lkwungen, Songhees and Esquimalt) Peoples of the Coast Salish Nation.
