Report sheds like on Indigenous representation in tech

Web Version

Hey there News River readers,

We are planning to increase our focus on Indigenous innovation and technology in future editions of the News River, and this story is a perfect example of what we want to elevate.

Our friends at the First Nations Technology Council recently released a report exploring Indigenous Leadership in Technology in British Columbia.

This is the first Indigenous-focused report of this scale, and it quantifies the digital divide experienced by Indigenous Peoples through many forms of digital inequity.

Here are some takeaways from the report:

  • Research participants identified digital connectivity and infrastructure as key barriers to advancing the prospects of Indigenous people in British Columbia’s digital economy.
  • Financial challenges and awareness often stand in the way of technology-related training for Indigenous youth
  • The report calls for private and public sector organizations to help address systemic, workplace, and interpersonal barriers individuals currently face, such as access to capital.
