New year, Animikii awards announcement!

Web Version

Boozhoo News River readers,

As we welcome the start of another calendar year we send warm wishes to our News River readers in the season of winter. Often a time of reflection, it's important to acknowledge milestones and celebrate the impact that community members are creating through their efforts in storytelling, education, and business.  This is the first newsletter of 2025 and we are featuring:

  • Connected North programming reaches a major milestone with the addition of its 200th school! Creating equitable access to educational opportunities for students in the North via high definition video technology, a curriculum of live and interactive virtual sessions delivered by experts and mentors.
  • The first Indigenous underwater docuseries in Canada, “Water Worlds” debuts on APTN, written and directed by Mistawasis First Nation band member Len Morissette and narrated by Cree-Métis actor Tantoo Cardinal.
  • Nominations are open for the BC Reconciliation Award, Indigenous Business Award, Polygon Award in First Nations Art - and more! The BC Achievement Foundation works to uplift and highlight the growth and success of the Indigenous business economy in BC.

Thanks to additional funding support from our friends at Taking IT Global, we’re making our biggest awards announcement ever.  We’re thrilled to share that eight incredible recipients received an Animikii Scholarship Award/Grant of $1000 each!   More than half of the recipients this year are young Indigenous women in tech or entrepreneurship, engaged in diverse fields such as filmmaking, language revitalization, online financial service delivery, computer and environmental science studies.

We are deeply grateful for the support of Taking IT Global, every year our selection committee has more eligible applicants than we have scholarships for. This was a truly generous and meaningful show of support.
