Indigenous perspectives on AI

Web Version

Hey there News River readers,

AI writing tools are dominating the headlines in recent weeks since the ChatGPT tool was released for free public use.

Unsurprisingly, there are drawbacks – and not just because high school students use AI to write their essays for them.

For example, what happens when a technology company builds a bilingual Māori-English model without consulting any Māori speakers? Papa Reo (a Māori language revitalization project through Te Hiku Media) writes about how this is just a modern form of colonization.

Want some more context? Te Hiku Media was the subject of a Wired article in 2021 on the need to save the Māori language from Big Tech.

If you are in the mood for listening instead of reading, McGill Computer Science Ph.D. student Michael Running Wolf (Northern Cheyenne) gives his perspective on the challenges of AI on the Tech Policy Press podcast.

We are so excited to see Indigenous Data Sovereignty discussed on social media, podcasts, and major news outlets lately.

Language is a huge part of this dialogue – especially the ownership of existing language data.

But Indigenous data goes far beyond this. It also includes stories, regalia, songs, art, ceremonies, oral teachings, and much more.

Read about it in the #DataBack eBook, which you can download for free at the link below.
