Indigenous-led forensic lab helps families still grappling with cold cases

Boozhoo News River readers,
Another week has passed, and we have another awesome news story from Atmos online to share. Haley Omeasoo (Hopi/Blackfeet) recently launched the first Indigenous-owned forensics organization dedicated to addressing the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) epidemic. Omeasoo, who is currently pursuing a PhD in forensic and molecular anthropology, started the Montana-based org to help families still grappling with cold cases get justice and closure. Her identity and expertise allows her to navigate this complex issue. “You really want to make sure that you’re representing the data [in a way that is] in favor of the people you are researching,” she says. “So many Indigenous people don’t trust law enforcement or researchers taking their DNA and information because they don’t know what’s going to happen to it after that.
