Big Tech versus Canadian news

Boozhoo News River readers,
Well, it looks like it’s finally starting to happen.
This week, Meta announced it would be permanently ending news availability on platforms in Canada. This came into effect yesterday, and many expect Google to follow suit.
This is in response to the passing of the Online News Act, Bill C-18, which requires big tech giants to pay media outlets for news content that they share or repurpose on their platforms.
Why it matters: The news outlets we share on the News River all use these platforms to share their stories. For Indigenous-owned and small, independent publishers, this makes it harder to reach their audience.
For more information: Read IndigiNews publisher Eden Fineday’s article in the Toronto Star, which we featured in last week’s News River. You can also check out writer and broadcaster Jesse Wente’s appearance on the BetaKit podcast about what this means for Indigenous content creators.
BC Indigenous Language Font Released

The First People’s Cultural Council (in collaboration with the B.C. government) recently completed BC Sans 2.0, the newest edition of a font that supports the 34 First Nations languages of B.C.
