Newsletter Leaf Journal XCVI 〜 Vacation newsletter
Welcome to the 96th edition of The Newsletter Leaf Journal. This newsletter comes to you from the laptop of the editor of The New Leaf Journal. Said editor is using his laptop because he is on vacation, and thus away from his waterproof keyboard and usual two-monitor set-up. For fellow Linux users out there, I will also note that this is the first newsletter to be written on a computer running EndeavourOS (almost all of my newsletters have been written on a computer running Manjaro Linux, but the first few were written on a computer running Windows 10).
Because I am away, this will be a short newsletter without some of the exciting newsletter content that regular readers have become accustomed to. This issue will only recap our articles from the previous newsletter week and our most-read content of the week. We will return to your regularly scheduled newsletter programming with links from around the web and other news and notes next week.

1. Leaves From The Week That Was
I published six new articles since the previous newsletter. You will find links and short descriptions below.
- Importance of Bing Indexing For Alt Search | NAF | August 7 | Summary: A webmaster's story highlights why indexing by Bing is important for discovery in many alternative search engines, namely DuckDuckGo.
- Paying Game Boy Dues For a Nintendo Switch | NAF | August 9 | Summary: In the newest Justin and Justina dialogue, Justin makes the specious case that Justina is not entitled to use her new impulse buy, a Nintendo Switch, until she pays her "Game Boy dues."
- CUNY Un-Persons a Successful Alum | NAF | August 10 | Summary As a CUNY (City University of New York system) graduate, I offer my take on a recent story wherein CUNY decided to beclown itself.
- Google Not Indexing My Murena Phone Review | NAF | August 11 | Summary: On August 9, the day before my trip, I scheduled this post for publication on August 11. For reasons that I will explain in brief, the timing turned out to be spectacular.
- Low Standards For NYC Dating Scene | NAF | August 12 | Summary: An Australian woman expressed amazement at the dating games of New York City men. Here, I expressed concerns about her alarmingly low standards.
- Using Web Archives To Get Around CAPTCHAs | NAF | August 12 | Summary: For reasons I explain, this short guide to using the Wayback Machine to circumvent CAPTCHAs followed from the NYC dating piece.
I also published seven Leaflets during the previous week. I will reserve discussion of one of the seven Leaflets for the next section.
- Syncthing PPA After Linux Mint Upgrade: A short story/quasi-guide on reinstalling the Syncthing PPA after upgrading to the new version of Linux Mint.
- Valve Adds Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Support: While I cannot imagine why I would take advantage of this new feature, I suppose that it is neat.
- Constantine XI Surpasses 2021 View Count: In addition to the positive note, I announced my aesthetic formatting revisions to my May 30, 2020 Constantine Xi article.
- USB-C Charger Surprises: I was once again caught off guard by a new device taking a USB-C cable for charging and data transfer purposes (in this case, my PocketBook InkPad Color).
- Setting Up PineTime Smart Watch: I set up my cheap free and open source PineTime watch. Review impending?
- Mullvad-CLI Upgrade on Laptop: As advertised, but I think that we'll make it.
2. Most-Turned Leaves Of The Newsletter Week
# | Article | Auth | Date | 22Top5 |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Review of /e/ - An Android Alternative For Mobile Phones | NAF | 11.21.21 | 1 (1) |
2 | Installing Ubuntu Touch on an Asus Nexus 7 (2013) | NAF | 7.5.21 | 26 |
3 | Review of the Teracube 2e Smartphone | NAF | 11.29.21 | 4 |
4 | Installing LineageOS on a 2013 Nexus 7 (Wi-Fi) | NAF | 7.28.21 | 1 |
5 | The Mystery of Sōseki and Tsuki ga Kirei | NAF | 3.14.21 | 32 (21) |
My 2021 review of /e/ OS (a mobile operating system that is based on LineageOS, which in turn is based on Android) was shared on Hacker News while I was traveling, leaving me among the last to know. It made Hacker News's page 1 and attracted an unprecedented number of visitors to The New Leaf Journal. The timing was notable in light of the fact that I had scheduled an article the day before complaining about the fact that Google has not indexed my /e/ OS review. As a result of the Hacker News share, it appears to have been noted on several other sites, but I have not had time to hunt down all of the shares yet.
The top four spots in our newsletter week top 5 were affected by the /e/ OS article. My Ubuntu Touch and LineageOS install articles and my Tearacube 2e review, which were all linked to in the /e/ OS review, had their best weeks on record. This unusual week meant that one of the two articles that had appeared in the first 31 newsletter week top 5s would be on the outside looking in for the first time. Despite the fact that one of those two articles, my list of favorite F-Droid apps, was published as a result of my /e/ OS review, it was my tsuki ga kirei article that made its 32nd top five in 2022 and 68th consecutive top 5 dating back to 2021.
3. Taking Leaf
Thank you as always for reading The Newsletter Leaf Journal. While it was a historic (by our humble standards) week at The New Leaf Journal, this newsletter was a bit sparse due to my being on vacation. You can see our most-recent issues for a better idea of the content that you will find in most newsletters. If you enjoy the content and have not done so already, you can sign up for the newsletter via email or RSS. I also syndicate our weekly newsletters to The New Leaf Annex on Bearblog.
Although I am away, The New Leaf Journal will continue to see new content over the next week. I look forward to mailing our next newsletter on August 19, 2022, with all the bells and whistles that regular readers and subscribers are accustomed to.
Until next week,
Cura ut valeas.
