Winner Winner
Last night I brought home the Best Screenplay award from the Seattle Film Festival. I was completely unprepared and did not know what to say when I went up on stage to get my trophy.
I thanked Chuck, who plays our Elvis impersonator and came with me to the awards ceremony, and Amy, of course, but I was genuinely flustered.
What I wish I'd said is:
Nothing has made me feel like writing my weird little stories (which are true, by the way) matters in the way that working on this beautiful little film has. I've worked with other people before, of course I have, but the lightning in a bottle you get when everyone throws themselves at what they do best, well, film brings all that together, doesn't it? I'm so grateful for everyone who made this story into a movie, but I have extra sparklers for Amy, Rocco, and Mike who read my script and said, "LET'S MAKE THIS THING."
(And for Chuck who roared so loud it filled the theater when they announced my win.)

We've stacked up a pile of selections and nominations, we've had a handful of screenings (both virtual and in person), but I think this is our first win. The nominations really do matter, but oh my, is it nice to win! I have a kitschy little trophy and a nice bottle of Barbados rum and OH SHIT I GOT BEST SCREENPLAY.

What’s next? We got selected for the Stockholm City Film Festival, so maybe we should go to Sweden? The PNW Indie Awards are coming up in September. You can still stuff the ballot box on that, so click through and vote for me, Amy, Carrie, Tony, and Mike, wouldja? We have another 15 or so festival notifications to get through and then, well, I don’t know.
In the meantime, Amy and I have launched another project. I had an idea, she has the production chops, and … give me another week or two and I’ll be ready to share. The first cuts are so good. So so good. You’re going to like this thing.
How are we feeling? Like this.
Yours in gratitude, as always.
