(un)Canned with Pam & Amy

A conversation with the team behind CANNED: Conversations about Getting Fired.

This morning, I published a Very Special Episode of CANNED: a conversation between me and my producer partner, Amy Guth. In it we talk about what we’ve learned, a few of our favorite takeaways, who is on our CANNED wish list, and we swear a fair bit because that’s what we do. Fuck yeah.

I love that you’ll get to hear more from Amy. While the idea for CANNED appeared fully grown in my head about 24 hours after I lost my job, there’s no way I’d have been able to deliver the quality audio Amy produces, and certainly not with her speed. It’s a bonus that she’s super into the idea behind CANNED. I hope you’ll enjoy hearing us talk about why this project sets us both on fire. Tune in here.

This conversation is episode 25, we publish a new one about once a week, with intermittent slowdowns for day jobs and other distractions. We’ve got good momentum but we could use a boost.

There are two things you can do to help us grow this project. They’re free.

One: If you like what you hear please share it with a friend or three. Forward this email to someone and tell them why you think they’ll like CANNED, or share a link to any episode of CANNED on social, if you do that kind of thing.

Two: Do you have a story — or do you know someone with a story — that you’ve been dyin’ to tell? We want to hear from you. We both hope hearing from us in this episode of (un)CANNED will sweep away any hesitations. “We’re the vault,” Amy says. We want you to feel safe telling your story. Reply to this email or send a note to talktocanned@gmail.com.

On a personal note, I changed jobs again. It has been a helluva year for me workwise. I walked away from what should have been an amazing job because my boss was openly adversarial. It was clear I did not have the support I needed to be successful. It was painful and deeply disappointing. Season Two of CANNED may be about canning your boss, stay tuned.

I’m happy to report I landed on my feet. A client I did some work for earlier this year resurfaced and I signed a meaty new project writing scripts for interactive technical exhibits. Hearing a good story lights me up like the eighth night of Hannukah, but so does learning how to do new things so I’m thrilled by this opportunity. I hope this gig breaks the work curse I’ve been under for much of this year.

It’s not great to piss off the gods of corporate America but if you’re going to be the fly in anyone’s kitchen, let it be theirs. CANNED has helped me think differently about work, who I give my time to, and in what quality. I hope you’ve taken something good from it too.

Thanks, as always, for supporting the weird creative people in your midst. I’m thrilled to be one of them.
