project actually is. The truth is calmer, and more interesting.

The short version: it is not genetic engineering. Verily releases only male
mosquitoes, which do not bite, infected with a natural bacterium that makes
wild females lay eggs that never hatch. In a California trial it cut biting
mosquitoes by about 95 percent. Now they want EPA approval to scale it across
Florida and California.
