If your AI product lacks override paths, you will lose enterprise deals
The next procurement filter for AI is not whether the model is impressive. It is whether the product exposes enough control for a real institution to trust it once something goes sideways.
You can see the market moving there from three directions at once. OpenAI’s Safety Bug Bounty puts agentic abuse, prompt injection, data exfiltration, and platform-integrity failures into a public reporting and remediation loop. OpenAI’s explanation of the Model Spec argues that intended model behavior should be something outsiders can inspect and debate. And Google’s latest Gemini update pushes the assistant deeper into memory, personal context, and adjacent surfaces.
Those moves look different on the surface. They are not. They are all responses to the same pressure: once AI becomes persistent, agentic, and context-rich, governance stops being a compliance wrapper and becomes core product design.
That has a very practical consequence for builders. If your product cannot show what happened, explain why it happened, limit what can happen next, and let a human intervene cleanly, you do not have an enterprise product. You have a demo with ambition.

That table is the minimum governance stack.
The uncomfortable part is that none of this is glamorous. It does not make for a dazzling launch clip. It does not trend on X as easily as benchmark gains or a new demo reel. But it is exactly the layer that decides whether a product survives legal review, security review, procurement review, and the first internal postmortem.
This is also why so much AI discourse feels oddly detached from what serious operators care about. The public conversation is still obsessed with intelligence in the abstract. The real buyer conversation is moving toward operational trust: who can inspect the system, who can constrain it, who can override it, and what happens when the model is confidently wrong in a sensitive workflow.
What to do about it is straightforward. If you build AI products, stop treating governance as a policy appendix. Put it in the roadmap. Design explicit logs. Design human override. Design bounded actions. Design review surfaces for risky behavior. Design for the moment someone inside a customer account asks, very reasonably, “How do I know what this thing just did?”
If you cannot answer that well, somebody else will win the deal.
What to ignore: endless benchmark chest-thumping with no corresponding story about controls, recovery, or accountability. A model that scores higher but cannot be governed is still a procurement problem.
