ACTION: 2 days left for CBP public comments
UPCOMING DEADLINE: Call for comments on Proposed Roads and Vehicle Barriers in Big Bend National Park
CBP is accepting public comments through July 13 on a major infrastructure proposal in Brewster County that includes approximately 17 miles of vehicle barriers and 205 miles of new or improved patrol roads, most of which is planned through Big Bend National Park.
The proposed roads would cross remote, rugged terrain that is ecologically and archeologically sensitive, including areas around the Dead Horse Mountains, Boquillas, Hot Springs, San Vicente, Mariscal Mountain and the length of the river corridor. The project would permanently and irreversibly damage this beautiful and wild landscape, requiring new roads, bridges, retaining walls, drainage structures, utility lines, surveillance towers, and staging areas.
Please submit comments urging CBP to:
justify each road and barrier segment with location-specific evidence of need;
avoid vehicle barriers in terrain where vehicle crossings are impossible or nonexistent;
protect archaeological, ecological, scenic, and cultural resources;
consider remote technology and mobile surveillance alternatives;
release detailed maps, engineering studies, and the full construction footprint; and
extend the comment period after complete project information is available.
Personal comments are especially valuable. Write in your own words and describe any firsthand knowledge of the land, wildlife, archaeology, history, recreation, tourism, or impacts to local communities.
