Plants for a small forest garden

By hello@growdigital.org (Jake Rayson) on Apr 07, 2020 11:24 am

A smaller forest garden can still contain a diverse range of edible crop plants, you just need to pay attention to the rootstock, species and final sizes

Laura on Facebook asked about plants for a smaller forest garden. Here are some pointers.

For more detail, see Creating a Forest Garden pp30, “Plants for small gardens”

  • Use dwarfing roostocks

  • Consider trained fruit trees eg espalier

  • Pollarded trees eg Small-leaved Lime, bay (can be pruned)

  • Smaller trees eg hawthorns, Pepper trees

  • Check sizes of plants PFAF or RHS

  • Fruit bushes

  • All perennial veg, and ground covers
