Forest Garden Livestream

Wednesday 14th October, 10am BST

The Sessile Oak

On

this week’s livestream

, I am slowing down the pace somewhat and taking my time with just one plant. The

Sessile Oak

. There are

two native oaks in the UK

, the Sessile Oak and the

English Oak

. We have Sessile Oaks growing mostly here, though they do cross readily with each other. They are incredible trees, supporting a

vast range of inverterbrates

and thus large numbers of verterbrates. Indeed, acorns were a staple food for many indigenous people in North America, and continue to be a food source in some Mediterranean countries eg

in Greece

.

Green acorns in the Sessile Oak, note absence of long stalk

A stream of practical videos

I’m creating a veritable slew of practical walkthrough videos for my online course The Backyard Forest. This is all the stuff I couldn’t squeeze in to the main body of the course, the nitty-gritty how-to stuff. It includes such delights as making maps, researching plants, clearing ground, planting trees etc.

For a full list, and to see which ones have been made, pop over to forestgarden.wales/walkthroughs

The videos are also on my YouTube channel, on a playlist called Practical walkthroughs for The Backyard Forest
