Viget25 and Team Honk

Hey friends,

I’m obsessed with telling airport jokes.

My doctor says it’s a terminal problem. ✈️

Thinking Too Hard 🤔

Viget25 happened last week. In no particular order, here's a few things that happened:

  • Worked from a full office (a first since the pandemic)
  • Ate homemade pop tarts 😋
  • Met and pet an alpaca (surprisingly soft!)
  • Threw a llama (not a real one)
  • Got an update on the state of the internet and current trends
  • Decoratively burned wood in log cabin that was over a century old
  • Took a deep dive into two recent Viget projects
  • Sat around multiple campfires, roasted marshmallows, and chatted with fellow Vigets
  • Discussed ideal project conditions
  • Sampled different local honeys made from different flowers
  • Learned both Euchre and Canadian Salad within hours of each other
  • Watched an unveiling of redacted 🤫
  • Ate in a greenhouse
  • Toasted and celebrated some really neat and special people
  • Got screened by TSA for a charcuterie 'paddle'

As I wrote last week, connections are incredibly important. As kids, those connections and memories happened naturally by proximity and interest yet I find as an adult it takes great intention and effort to create spaces WHERE those connections can happen naturally again. High fives over a good hand of cards, discussing how Thundertree is a little too far from Phandelver, comparing mosquito bites, shared gratefulness for whoever made the coffee in Cabin 3 early in the morning. Natural connections made by a great deal of effort and prep ahead of time!

Interesting Web Bits 🍜

Web Stuff:

  • A pretty neat 3D data visualization of NBA game data. Vinicius also has some pretty neat experiments.
  • A look at some of the pitfalls and issues in converting values to strings in JavaScript.
  • Josh Comeau talks about how weird CSS height can be.
  • Feels like we might be witnessing the trough of disillusionment with NextJS as teams rediscover that server-side frameworks can be great.

Other Stuff:

  • Watch (and listen) to Koji Kobura recreate the pause music from Goldeneye 64.
  • Neal.fun is back again, this time with an internet roadtrip. Join Team Honk! 🪿
