Rumination and the Jungles of Ecuador

Hey friends,

What's the best halloween dessert?

I scream and booberry pie 😱🥧

(I know, I know, we're scraping the bottom of the Halloween barrel here...)

Thinking Too Hard 🤔

We're continuing our exploration of the idea that reading, writing, and self-reflection keep our thinking and opinions sharp. Last week we talked about self-reflection, and how we usually make it too hard for ourselves.

There's also difference between reflection and rumination. Rumination (like a cow chewing its cud) is repetitive thinking that doesn't lead to new insight or action. There's a danger of trapping ourselves in brain loops.

Thought by ITSELF is not inherently valuable. If our thinking doesn't PRODUCE anything, we might be stuck in a rut or a tangle. Reflection, then, can be a way to break out of this. If you see yourself stuck in a rumination loop, maybe ask yourself:

Believe me, I wind up ruminating all the time, but I think the trick is recognizing it for the loop it is and finding ways to move towards action.
