Maker-Thrill and Pooh-Case

In which I remember making things and Capitalize All The Things.

Hey friends,

Why didn’t the sweet potatoes render?

The browser blocked mixed gravy content.

Thinking Too Hard 🤔

Do you remember the first time you MADE something and then FELT like a frickin' wizard?

I distinctly remember the first time I made something MOVE with JavaScript many (MANY) moons ago and feeling that exhilaration — that feeling of pride that comes from taking something from the ephemeral idea-space and rendering it into reality. Since then, I've built many things, and I have to admit that sometimes I forget to stop and enjoy that moment of 'maker-thrill'.

One positive benefit of this glut of AI-powered prototyping is watching others experience that type of 'maker-thrill'. It reminded me of that silly little animation all those years ago.

When's the last time you felt that way?

Interesting Web Bits 🍜

Web Stuff

  • We have fluid text sizes, why not fluid letter-spacing? Although there's more going on here than just that — it's quite clever!
  • Github's new design docs say, "No toast for you!" 🙅🍞
  • The winner of this week's Meta Award (as in self-referential, not Facebook, lol) goes to the Down Detector of Down Detector ... or maybe it's the extra recursive Downdetector's Downdetector's Downdetector's Downdetector
  • I don't know about "most hated", but maybe "least understood"... Juan Diego takes us through CSS's asin(), acos(), atan() and atan2() functions.

Other Stuff

  • This is the type of stuff I love to see: home-baked apps with a very specific purpose (In this case, handling the fiddly scoring of a boardgame).
  • Juha-Matti wrote an eulogy for their old laptop.
  • For SOUNDING busy, the Busy Simulator. (I had an actual emotional reaction to the Google Calendar sound because my brain tried to think of what meeting I forgot that was about to happen 😅)
  • Ah... I've seen this (and done this) but never had a name for it: The Pooh Case. 🐻

Watch and Play

  • 🎮 If you're a fan of RTS games, the Chrono Divide is recreating Red Alert 2, but in the browser!
  • 🎮 I'm terrible at SQL queries, but someone made a detective game out of them. I can think of much worse ways to learn something... (I also managed to completely break the site on the second investigation 😅)
  • 🎮 My Light and Spirit is a sokoban-style puzzle game that uses light as a twist.
