Dip Pens and Booster Rockets
Hey friends,
We're rapidly approaching the section of the year I call 'Ghost Turkey' -- the strange middle section between Halloween and Thanksgiving where EVERYTHING seems to happen. Hope y'all have a smooth Ghost Turkey! π»π¦
Thinking Too Hard π€
Do you have something that you used to love doing, but has seemingly disappeared from your life?
For me, it's creating art. It's what I went to school for β but it's no longer a part of my normal life. For a long time, creating anything felt like WORK, especially when I was a full-time designer. I would sit down to draw something, feel the energy drain out, and move on to something else.
I recently pulled down a container of my old calligraphy and dip pen drawing tools (several decades old now π΄) for my daughters to experiment with β but instead I WAS THE ONE that got hooked. We sat down to draw with some old nibs and ... it felt like it USED TOβback when I dreamed of becoming a sequential artist. Everything from the sound of the nib on the paper to the flow of ink. I hadn't felt that kind of energy in a long time.
If you haven't seen someone work with dip pens and ink washes, check this video out. It does a good job of showing the FEEL of it (even though it's technically a fountain pen):
I'm not sure how far I'll chase this, but it was so refreshing to feel that old creative energy again!
