Creative People and Regrettable Music Choices

Hey friends,

Hope you all had a great 4th of July! This year we were able to celebrate with family at Lake Anna—fireworks, fishing, pickleball, kayaking, and lots and lots of food!

Fireworks over a lake view from a dock. Kids watch the fireworks wrapped in towels.

Thinking Too Hard 🤔

Do you consider yourself a 'creative person'?

A surprising number of people answer no—even people I consider extremely creative. To most, a 'creative person' seems to be someone skilled in the traditional arts, such as drawing, painting, and music. I think that's too narrow a definition.

Ever see a teacher create curriculum from scratch, a grandmother create a personalized quilt, or even someone so skilled with a turn of phrase as to make all guests feel welcome and valued? Aren't those acts of creativity?

I think creativity is a mindset, one that utilizes the materials you have in pursuit of a goal in a thoughtful and often playful manner.

You might just be more creative than you give yourself credit for!

Interesting Web Bits 🍜

Web Stuff

  • Josh Comeau's 'State of Devs' results are in. Some of the results are surprising... (Linkin Park... really?) You can also read Josh's take on the results.
  • A nice guide to getting started with scroll-driven animations, there's an awful lot we'll be able to do (requires Chrome or Firefox) once they get this in Safari.
  • It was only a matter of time before we started seeing liquid glass demos on the web.
  • DEMO: A clever little grid column transition.
  • DEMO: An 8-bit moon shader

Other Stuff

  • Writing forces you to understand and question your own deeply held ideas. It's also hard (but worth it)!
  • In an act of bravery, Joan Westenberg deleted their second brain. I wonder how many piles of things I've been keeping could be safely deleted... 🤔
