Creating While Adulting and Nice Rocks

Hey friends,

It's fall y'all! 🍂

Our family celebrates the transition of the season with homemade cider, various pumpkin flavored items, and a movie marathon. Do you have any fall traditions?

(Ok, ok... the OFFICIAL start is Sept. 22 — but we're running on feels rather than facts here...)

Things I Wrote/Spoke ✍️🎤

About a year ago I started down a rambling thought train about creativity, freak energy, and how to create while ALSO adulting. Thanks in large part to our tradition of LabShares at Viget, I was able to compress all that into a presentation.

In it, I talk about why we stop creating, why we SHOULD create, and some things we can do to nurture creativity even during the busiest seasons of our lives.

You can read the transcript here.

Interesting Web Bits 🍜

Web Stuff

  • Ruby on Rails isn't outdated, it's survived the hype cycle and come out stronger. This is also what I tell my kids about myself. 💪👴
  • Vicki talks about 'walking around the app' and broken windows as a mental model for a type of habitual, passionate care for the things we create.
  • Emil Kowalski wrote a thoughtful guide on WHY you should animate something, or maybe why you shouldn't.
  • Speaking of animation, Unseen Studio released a neat case study of a celluar collider interaction.
  • This year's js13k should be wrapping up. It's always fun to check out the submissions!
  • I think it's a good question to ask what you WOULD NOT DO for a million dollars... (Also those proposed contract terms... 💀)
  • Adam gives us a list of 100 new(ish) things in CSS.
  • Dave reminds us that writing code is only part of the job. We also "move cards across boards" 😂
  • Yeah, a 996 (which is 9am to 9pm, 6 days a week) is a hard pass. 🙅
  • WATCH: Miriam Suzanne explains the new height:stretch keyword in CSS.

Other Stuff

  • Simply a collection of nice rocks. I love the web...
  • WATCH: I learned a little about the physics of circular motion without meaning to.
  • WATCH: In 2019, scientists filmed the 'bumpy snailfish' on the ocean floor.
  • WATCH: 🦀 or 🙅🦀
