AI Anxiety and Honoring the Pug

Hey friends,

Did you hear about the first restaurant to open on the moon?

It had great food, but no atmosphere. ๐ŸŒ

Thinking Too Hard ๐Ÿค”

When engaging with AI, it's easy to feel anxious about being left behind or becoming obsolete.

But I don't think we need to stay there.

I'm reminded of another sea change in the late 2000's โ€” the iPhone.

My degree is in traditional graphic design, and my first job was creating newspaper ads and billboards by the hundreds. Print as a medium was already in decline, and the iPhone accelerated it even faster. I saw a clear divide among my print design peers who ALSO felt this anxiety of becoming obsolete: those who experimented thrived, while those who resisted change struggled.

I don't think this wave of AI is quite the same as the release of the iPhone, but the spirit of exploration, of growth mindset, remains a constant.

I firmly believe that if we apply ourselves to experimentation and exploration, investigating the changes in our industry (which has been changing for decades) with a growth mindset, we will find that many of our skills still applyโ€”even if things don't look exactly the same.

And in that sense, we don't need to be worried, but rather to remain open and curious.
