With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility
And often great napping
Matt is so kind as to let me have the pen back. And while he wont relent on the “250 words or less,”1 I have some greenfield here to do what I want over a few days. I feel like a dad whose kids are off on a trip somewhere and I have the house to myself with nobody to supervise and no responsibilities. I have so many plans, so much to do, without being interrupted to make a bowl of potato chips when they could just take the potato chips out of the drawer that was specifically moved to their height and pour it into in the bowl that was specifically moved to their height and I wouldn’t have to do anything other than clean up all the crumbs that are left everywhere even though each potato chip should fit easily in their mouth so why are there crumbs on the table?…sorry, where were we?
Yes, I have free reign to say or do as I please on napping and nap adjacent topics. And I intend to take full advantage and not waste a moment of it. As they say, “With great power comes great responsibility.”23 But first, I need to nap.
[Ed.: I think it’s "250 words or ‘fewer’” — anyone else, can we get a ruling here?]
“They” in this case is apparently up for debate. I had always assumed it was Jesus. But when I went to confirm, the search engine (I won’t say which once since we at TND are not promoting any specific search engine), I got all sorts of answers.
You’ve got Matt’s favorite, Winston Churchill, saying “Where there is great power, there is a great responsibility.” And the New Testament: “From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded. And from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”
Then apparently the French got involved: The following passage appeared with a date of May 8, 1793 in a collection of the decrees made by the French National Convention, which translated is: “They must consider that great responsibility follows inseparably from great power.”
And of course, nothing happens these days without the Marvel team, or DC Comics, or whatever I don’t know the difference: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Twice said by Uncle Ben in Raimi’s and Garfield’s Spider-Man movies, and once by Aunt May in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
[Ed.: For myself and all the other small minds out there, I wanted to point out this hobgoblin (see what I did there?) of a consistency issue: I’d have either gone with “Maguire’s and Garfield’s” movies or “Raimi’s and Webb’s” movies, as Hen described one movie by reference to a director and the other by reference to an actor, whereas my framing is “actor/actor” or “director/director.” Marc Webb’s name didn’t totally ring a bell for me, but it turns out he directed 500 Days of Summer, which I loved.]
