When in Rome...
An American napping through Italy
I returned last week from a really incredible family trip to Italy. As we were taking in the ancient sites, eating delicious pizza and pasta, and wandering the Tuscan alleyways, I also had an opportunity to nap my way through this beautiful land.
Throughout this week I’ll be sharing some of my favorite naps from our Italy adventure, from Rome to the Amalfi Coast. I’ll begin today with the nap I was perhaps most proud of, in one of the most famous sites in the entire country.
When you think of famous sites in Rome, what comes to mind? The Vatican. The Colosseum. The Trevi Fountain. And of course, the Pantheon. A former Roman temple and Catholic Church, I want to preface by saying that I meant no disrespect to this incredible structure as my eyes slowly drifted closed.
Perhaps it was the brutal heatwave, or the hundreds of pasta carbs settling into my body, or the warm afternoon sunlight coming through the dome. There I sat with my family in the Pantheon pews, taking a load off after walking miles and miles of ancient Roman cobblestones.
I looked around at the incredible ancient artwork, the statues, the magnificent architecture of this structure. And there I went, temporarily losing consh in one of the most famous sites in Rome. I can’t imagine I’m the first person in thousands of years to take in its beauty through the medium of a nap, and surely not the last. Ciao.
