Tryin' to Reason...
In memory of Jimmy Buffett
So much has been shared about Jimmy Buffett’s passing this week, from his incredible fans to his dear family to musicians from across the spectrum who had the joy of meeting Jimmy at some point during their career (and if you haven’t read Matt’s pieces from the past three days, go back, read them and have a good cry).
My experience of Jimmy and his shows I’m sure is similar to so many others. The joy of the fans in the parking lot, the energy of his live shows, the fun of jumping up and down on the grass to songs I’ve heard played live time and time again.
And in addition to all that, for me, what I’ve always loved is sitting down with my guitar on a summer evening, perhaps with a cold beer or some rum over ice, and playing Jimmy’s songs.
His lyrics have always spoken to me. Sure the Margaritavilles and Cheeseburgers in Paradise get everyone singing, but the songs about growing older, about the simple pleasures of looking out at the ocean or gathering with friends on Labor Day weekend are what truly make his music special and real to me.
Musically, Jimmy’s songs are accessible to so many people to play on their own. The chords to most of his melodies are a simple structure, such that pretty much anyone can pick up a guitar or ukulele and sing Come Monday or Pirate Looks at 40 around the campfire or on their front porch swing, adding their own layers or lyrics to Jimmy’s originals.
The Ocean has called you Jimmy. We’ll keep singing your tunes for years to come. Perhaps after a quiet nap on the ocean shore.
